I am still trying to understand this stuff so who knows if it recorded correctly. i sent a PM to barthax about more details on how recording works and presets on the keymappings and such.

ha ha, this may be a blow-out test. don't work too hard at it. i'll post another when i learn more.

OK, let's use this as a run thru for learning how to properly record a mame session. please fill in the blanks.

1- Get mame at wolfmame.mameirc.net
2- put the desired romset in the mame\roms folder
3- start>run/search, type CMD
4- navigate to the mame folder, ie cd\mame
5- type record gamename gamename (record robotron robotron , which runs the robotron rom and saves the inp as robotron.inp in the \inp folder)
6- How do you get it to save the key mappings so you don't have to remap with the tab key each time starting a game?

Setup the files
1- Get mame at wolfmame.mameirc.net

map the controls
3- start mame by double clicking the mame.exe found in the windows folder
4- navigate to Configure General Inputs
5- navigate to Player 1 Controls and set the key mappings to match your controller
6- navigate to Other Controls and set the key mappings for the start and coin buttons on your controller
7- navigate to Return to Previous Menu, then Exit

start and record a game
8- start>run/search, type CMD
9- navigate to the mame folder, ie cd\mame
10- type record gamename gamename (record robotron robotron , which runs the robotron rom and saves the inp as robotron.inp in the \inp folder)

retrieving the recording
11-navigate to the mame\inp folder and find the .inp file

playing it back
12- use playback robotron robotron from the CMD prompt

as another test, i just attached a 400k game that stopped on wave 16 using the exact steps above.
would you mind seeing if it replays on your system?
i am able to replay it on mine with playback robotron robotron

This kind of stuff needs to be added/organized into a TG Wiki MAME section ^

agree. it shouldn't be so confusing. I'm a slow learning until a trail is laid and clearly explained anyway. so i'm sure many others are in same boat.

If you can confirm that the new 400k inp works properly. we can set this submission to reject and i'll try another submission using the exact steps outlined.

Plays back fine. However, for this variation you have to enter the service mode (F2 repeatedly) until you get to the pictured green settings screen and then change the settings accordingly.

when i started the recording i did the f2 to get into the settings. are you saying to go into the settings a second time?
