    X-Enduro! (Joust-X)
    Track
    https://www.twingalaxies.com/scores.php?scores=194860
    Rules
    --5 lives to start
    --Extra life every 20,000
--Difficulty Of Play: 9 (Maximum Difficulty/EXTREME)

    Romsets:
Any- Red or Green. Red was early, slightly more difficult, and has the unfixed “pterodactyl hunting” bug.

    Controls:
Using Player 1 or Player 2 is acceptable. Using Player 2 would involve pressing the 2-player start button then letting Player-1 die off immediately.

    Special Notes:
This is an EXTREME Jousting challenge, so it is considered unsporting/illegal to stand on a platform and immediately kill off the Pterodactyls which come out at the beginning of Wave 8's and 13's (18,23,28 etc etc etc). The Pterodactyl's can be killed at any point later in the wave once they are safely flying onscreen.

Red Rom Detail- Pterodactyl hunting (TERY) is not allowed. Tery hunting would be defined as stopping the forward progress of the wave with the intent of only killing Tery's. This would be observed in the early waves of the game, leaving one gray enemy (Hunter) in the grasp of the Lava Troll, while the player sits on a ledge killing one Tery after another.

    HISTORY:
This Twin Galaxies scoring challenge was created in honor of Python Anghelo who was a key artist for Joust and passed on April 9, 2014 after a brave & valiant battle against cancer. RIP

Joust was released in July 1982 by a Williams Electronics development team which was fully engrained in the culture of chess and pinball. Williams was coming off of the huge space shooting success of Defender and it was decided to try building an exciting game without bullets.
Being a methodical game of predictive trajectories, many players learned to stretch a quarter into very lengthy games...but these games were played on default difficulty. Thirty plus years later, those masters need a new challenge to prove they are still honored knights in the world of battling thy enemy. So crank up the difficulty, mount-up on the most fearless feathered steed and take to the skies. Glory, fame and adulation of the 21st century spectators awaits ye!
    Submission Message
Stephen set the next submission threshold at 250k, so here it is!
Wave 18 was a plateau, now wave 33 will be the next to roll past with a rack of lives.
After that hopefully 500k and eventually a cool million.
The X-Trifecta would be a million on extreme settings for Robo, Joust, and Defender. 1 down 2 to go!

Hey Stephen! Just had a practice game of Joust-X. Stopped at wave 73 with 1.1M and approx. 20 lives.
Now to catch a long game on recording.
The Tery waves when the ledge is on the bottom are a real pain, so that'll be exciting to watch on playback.

That's just crazy. Is this the hardest difficulty or can it get harder?

that is the hardest it can get. basically difficulty 9 is no harder than wave 90 on difficulty 5. just gets up to full speed.

eric liddell and lon both report an emergent behavior where flight patterns of enemies slightly change about every 2million points and by 6-8 mil the blue shadow lords get an oddball flight behavior.

This seems to be the road these classic games are taking these days. Lets just play them on the hardest settings possible.

well, 30 years of practice on default settings has left little to the imagination.
In 1982-83 playing a long game meant god-status in an arcade. but doing it for 30 years? c'mon, where's the challenge.
Not all games had a difficulty adjustment but in hindsight it was brilliance if they did.

The biggest example...Robotron, lots of people can play default settings for an hour or more.
Now put it on extreme settings, you narrow a field of thousands down to a handful.
Bump up robo to VKE with 50k bonus and you end up with less than you can count on one hand who have mastery at that level.

I don't think Mastery on these games can be defined by default settings any more, there is way too much the game code has left to teach on the harder settings.
Zoo Keeper's Zeke-99 will bring out a new arcade hero before the default settings will. foretelling the future....

Mario Bros. has fallen into the same category. Playing it on the Hardest settings makes getting those crazy scores much more difficult.
