MAME dip switches ?

  1. MAME dip switches ?

    Hey guys,
Forgive me for sounding dumber than the offspring of a TV weather girl and a village idiot, but I cannot get dip settings to save when I change them.
Thought I'd try Amidaru for fun, changed it, reset, still the same. Reset and change quickly on bootup? Not quick enough!
How do I save it like it used to always do before, automatically?

    Many thanks in advance.
    ;)

Could be any of a number of reasons… are you using record.bat?
If you just play without recording, are your DIPs at default or have they been changed?

When you say reset, are you using the option in the [Tab] menu (supported by later versions)? Or [Shift-F3]? Or [Esc] then relaunching?

I also want to ask about this village idiot…

Reset meaning pressing escape and re-starting.
Every game I play is recorded: "record vfive vfive".
Played without recording and changed it there, still was wrong when recording afterwards.
    Thanks Terry.

Hey Paul...I ran into this question when I first started using MAME - had to experiment a bit before I got it figured out. There may be other ways to solve it (i.e. a cfg file), but the following process works for me without adding any permanent configurations...I think this should work for the later versions of MAME (I am running 167):

    1. Start recording (i.e. record amidaru amidar on command line)
    2. Hit Tab, then go down to Dip Switches and hit Enter.
    3. Make your changes, then go down to Reset and hit Enter - the recording will restart (overwriting the original .inp that was created), and the new settings will be in effect.

If you hit escape and go back to step one, the default switches will be back in effect (not the ones you want), which I think is what you're seeing. Because of this, if I want to restart during a bad game, I go back to the Dip Switches menu and go down to Reset again (all previous Dip changes will be maintained). By now I've done this so many times, I have the keystrokes down pat, and I can restart the recording in under 2 seconds haha...this is how I create all my .inps.

    Hope that helps.

A few ways around… record.bat seems to have been written to ensure defaults are used (say for MARP submissions) so if you also submit your scores to sites that require defaults, proceed with care.
If you edit record.bat (making a backup copy is always wise), you should see two lines that refer to the cfg folder - try placing "rem " in front of each.

Alternatively, a handy one to know is to make your DIP changes, then press [Shift-F3] twice, recheck your DIPS and it should have restarted with your modified DIP settings. Later versions also allow this sort of resetting through the [Tab] menu. Test it out though, earlier versions of MAME don't do the [Shift-F3] reset in the same way… from memory I think this is referred to as a "soft reset"…?
