Without the game settings I am not going to vote abstaining.

The The Dip Switch game setting especially Dip Switch B dips sw 5 sw 6 and sw 7 sw8, could have been shown at the either the beginning or the end of the race.

Welcome John Beresford to Twin Galaxy & congratulations on 48 million Next 50 million

    Thank you for the message,
Arcade-Club Bury England is where i did this run.
its a bit difficult to get to look at the test screen for settings being i don't work there.
Ive spoken a few times with one of their technicians, Mark Singleton. He can verify.

The provided picture of the test menu indicates that the correct settings are used.
Also, the start timer and the time added at checkpoints is correct.

The traffic doesn't look more/less dense than Normal settings.

I'm voting accept for this submission. Congratulations John

Maybe we can summon @stella_blue for a second opinion

I had voted Yes on this when it was first Submitted, but did not comment on it due to
knowing John myself and did not want to appear to sway the vote.

But as others have now have hopefully seen, it is a legitimate score on correct Hardware Settings.
It is just unfortunate that he does not have constant access to the PCBs or coin door to show settings.

I can however tell you that the Cab in question was, on the days that I and another friend (Not John)
visited the Arcade Club was running Normal/Normal settings, as we are both OutRun Cab owners.
I know this does not prove anything as regards the settings John run the Submission on,
but I have no doubt that the Arcade Club would not change the settings just for him to do the Submission.
Arcade Club is a very well respected place here in the U.K.

I have seen other Submissions been allowed when access has not been possible,
as long as it (a) Stands up to the scrutiny of everyone (especially regular players and experts)
and (b) has some integrity of the Arcade which operates it.

I believe this was Run on Pole Position at Richie Knuckles Arcade in NJ, and was accepted.

I have done more runs on OutRun since 1986 then I care to remember and as far as I am concerned this was one hell of a good one, done on Real Original Hardware, on correct TG settings.

    Great Run John.

    Yes from me.
    Prepare to Qualify.

With or without the diagnostic screen, the Time and Difficulty settings can be easily determined by the gameplay alone.

Both are clearly set to Normal, as required.

This is a perfectly valid submission.

I have some additional info on the Time Adj and Difficulty DIP switch settings.

    Extend Times

Below are the number of seconds added at the beginning of every stage (for each setting):

    Name: Out Run Time Adj.jpg
Views: 23
Size: 60.5 KB

I have highlighted the stages chosen during John's submitted attempt.

Verifying the Time Adj setting is simple. If the player begins Stage 1 with 75 seconds, then Normal is the current setting. No need to look at anything else.

    Difficulty

Below are the maximum number of vehicles that can be spawned simultaneously during Stages 1 through 5 (for each setting):

    Name: Out Run Difficulty.jpg

Size: 19.1 KB

Thanks for the info, Are the Stage 5 Autobahn Easy Extended Seconds really 55. Pattern looks off.
Why would it be less time on easy?
Also very interested where you found the traffic spawn information.

The same is true for Cloudy Mountain (Stage 3):

55 seconds for Normal, but 57 seconds for both Hard and Hardest

It makes no sense, and is most likely a programming error.

With respect to scoring and timing, the Out Run code is plagued by numerous bugs.

The source for both tables is a blog by Chris White, a UK software engineer who disassembled and completely rewrote the Out Run code as part of his "Cannonball" project.
