Guinness reinstates Billy Mitchell’s Donkey Kong, Pac-Man records

  1. Guinness reinstates Billy Mitchell’s Donkey Kong, Pac-Man records

The move comes just over two years after Mitchell's records were expunged following an investigation by Twin Galaxies International Scoreboard, which partners with Guinness to adjudicate video game records.

Update: Reached for comment by Ars Technica, Twin Galaxies owner and CEO Jace Hall sent the following meme as an image, which he said could serve as his quote on the matter:

Guinness released this insane propaganda video where Mitchell gets to talk about how great he is.

This is so incredibly baffling. They're claiming the decision is based on "eyewitness testimony", and there's some vague talk about "evidence" which isn't expounded upon. The rest is all just people gushing about how fantastic and great and lovely Mitchell is like some crazy cult.

Well, I guess if Guinness wants to burn their own house down and ruin their reputation just to serve Billy Mitchell, that's their business.

These are the key passages from the Arstechnica article. The words "legal agreement," "confidentiality agreement," "sue," and "legal threat" stood out to me.

"Mitchell told Ars he has known about the results of Guinness' investigation since December but that today's announcement was delayed because "we had to wrap up the legal agreement." Mitchell wouldn't comment any further on that, saying he was bound by a confidentiality agreement.

While Mitchell last year threatened to sue Guinness World Records over his score removal, he told Ars that this legal threat had been previously rendered moot and did not play into Guinness' decision."

So is the new conspiracy going to be that Guinness World Records backed down to Billy. Lmao, I swear, these detractors of his just refuse to acknowledge that he simply didn't cheat. Here it is now Guinness even looked into it and now because everyone didn't get to hear what they wanted from Guinness now everyone is like "herrr derr let's boycott Guinness now!"

It's okay to be wrong folks. That's life.

Conspiracy? Let's run through those keywords again

"legal agreement," "confidentiality agreement," "sue," and "legal threat"

I wouldn't call it conspiracy - Guinness did receive a "cease and desist" letter that threatened legal action, and presumably Guinness consulted with their counsel, and made a call, the fruits of which we see today. One can reasonably view Guinness' actions as a legal settlement, hence the legal agreement and confidentiality agreement. You don't need a "legal agreement" and a "confidentiality agreement" to simply rescind a former action and reinstate records.

Can I just say that Jace Hall's stupid ******* meme response is also extremely irresponsible?

Most of the articles that have covered this don't have anything in the way of counter-evidence. You know, the counter-evidence that's 100% unequivocal and proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that he's a cheater.

But instead of making use of that evidence, the articles are now 90% quotes from Billy Mitchell and Walter Day and Guinness, and the space reserved for Twin Galaxies' response is entirely taken up by a picture of Kermit sipping tea. Yeah, thanks, that's very helpful. Thank you.

I agree with you all this is wrong that Billy's Guinness records got reinstated, esepcially the the overwhelming mount of evidence that showed he used MAME DK records and the switching of the same DKjr board. A matter of fact I was their in Dania Beach, Florida at Boomers near Ih95. Name: image.png

    Theme Park
Boomers Family Fun Center, Dania Beach, FL
I saw Todd Rogers and his Girlfriend along with a Game tech Billy a a few people around the Donkey Kong Junior when they were filming. When I was their, Billy played only DK jr. but no Donkey Kong was played and their was no DK their, and their was not big crowd just people he knew.

Billy Mitchell was the first to do a live perfect Pac-Man game with film media coverage, that was smart of him..

But Chris Ayra was the First player to achieve it and figured it out patterns and the split screen and extra dots at Grand Prix Race 'O' Rama in Fort Lauderdale, Florida off of State road 84 and University Drive close to the Florida Turnpike Their was K-9 Academy & Carvel close on State rd 84 then.
Open 24 hours built like a Castle with a estimated a few thousands arcade games at the time was the World Largest arcade game room in the world. Rows 10 of Defender, Pac-Man, Galaga, Donkey Kong, Centipede. It was awesome site to see.
I JJT lived a half mile from their, every day I was their.

Chris Ayra is a far better overall Pac-Man /Ms Pac-Man player than Billy.

These players and Dwayne Richards, Matt Hall, Jason V91, Garrett Holland and a few others are far better players, overall video game player than Billy Mitchell could ever be, period.

The key is that he had MEDIA COVERAGE,TV, MAGAZINES, On TV shows,NEWS, NEWSPAPER, now online internet and Billy took advantage of the being the first Live Perfect Pac-Man game at Funspot.
He decieved the other players, who agreed to do the Perfect Pac-Man on the same day but went ahead and did it earlier, this was his great oportunity and he took advantage of it.

The other thing is Pac-Man at the time was the worlds most popular arcade game & known throughout the world.

Plus, He picked other world popular arcade games Donkey Kong & Ms Pac-Man and the famous character Mario, also, he played other popular arcade games Centipede, Burgertime.

Also, don't forget he knew that this was the 40th anniversary of the Pac-Man.Celebrating PAC-MAN's 40th. anniversary in 2020! Born on May 22, 1980, PAC-MAN immediately rose to meteoric popularity, first in video game arcades, then through an array of branding and entertainment appearances.

Another player who achieved the first Perfect Pac-Man game Bill Bastable

Bill Bastable is one of the best Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-man players in gaming history. He achieved 3,332,820 on Pac-Man on multiple occasions, the first being on September 6, 1982. This score is the maximum number of points a player can score through the end of board 255 (3,326,600) plus all the points from the dots on the left side of the split screen and the one key (6,220). This score ends up being just 360 points shy of a maximum possible score on factory 3 + 1 settings (3,333,180) and 540 points shy on 5 + 1 settings (3,333,360). These and other scores were considered "perfect games" based on the knowledge and understanding of the time. Some "perfect game" designations were based on the maximum number of points scored through the end of the 6th key (the last blue time board #18), 340,400. Randy Tufts achieved this "perfect game" status on multiple occasions. He eventually matched Bill Bastable's score (3,332,820) by February of 1983, and may have exceeded it based on the knowledge of 7 dots on the right side of the split screen. Bill inadvertently ate 3 dots on the right side of the split screen during a game he played on November 5, 1982, making it his highest Pac-Man score -3,332,850.

Years later Bill gained a more comprehensive knowledge of the split screen and the 9 regenerating dots on the right side. He demonstrated this by playing a game on 5 + 1 settings and ending up with the maximum score of 3,333,360. This occurred on September 2, 1988.

Unfortunately, this game does not count. Due to the fact the hardware was manipulated to freeze gameplay on at least three different occasions, it is considered illegitimate. It is still significant that Bill had the knowledge and skill to achieve this feat in the late 1980s.

Some of his other accomplishments include scoring 957,760 (August 6-7, 1987) and 966,760 (March 9, 1988) on turbo Ms. Pac-Man , as well as scoring 881,360 (September 23-24, 1984) and 915,180 (March 25, 1991) on regular Ms. Pac-Man. The highest regular Ms. Pac-Man score he achieved was from November 17, 1989 with a score of 933,940.
