    TODO:

    * Hitachi HD38880/HD38882 speech

    Bugs:

    - vanguard, vanguardc, vanguardj: Broken enemy firing sound. Gyrovision (ID 03363)

    WIP:

    - 22nd November 2020: Mr. Do - Added bezel, marquee and control panel artwork for Vanguard. Cleaned for MAME by Dreamstate. Scanned by Paul Swan.

    - 0.221: Paul Swan added clone Vanguard (Germany). Note: Dumped from a Germany sourced Zaccaria Vanguard cabinet PCB. Continue text is in German. Only the program ROMs were dumped, but the other ROMs labels match the original SNK version and are believed to be the same.

    - 0.152: Changed M6502 CPU1 clock speed to 705562 Hz.

    - 0.133u1: Renamed (vangrdce) to (vanguardc) and (vanguarj) to (vanguardj).

    - 0.122u8: RansAckeR improved dipswitches according to manuals in Vanguard. Added dipswitches 'Coinage Bonus' and 'Unused'.

    - 2nd September 2007: Mr. Do - Zorg vectorized Vanguard, which replaces the existing bezel. Very pretty.

    - 3rd September 2006: Mr. Do - Fixed Vanguard bezel to no longer play like the Atari 5200 version.

    - 26th August 2006: Mr. Do - Added Vanguard bezel from MAME.net and Mean Arena. Some of these decent stuff are so-so; some are REALLY good.

    - 0.97u3: Added missing sound1 roms to clone Vanguard (Centuri).

    - 0.88u7: Mame32Plus added clone Vanguard (Japan). BUT added sample support. Changed M6502 CPU1 clock speed to 930000, sound2 roms addresses and VSync to 61.246746 Hz. Added samples vg_voi-0 to vg_voi-f.wav.

    - 12th July 2004: 3D ARCADE - New 3D cabinet model for Vanguard from Pariah.

    - 0.81u5: Curt Coder added Vanguard SHOTB sound effect and marked fake roms in Vanguard (Centuri) as NO_DUMP. Changed M6502 CPU1 clock speed to 1411125 Hz. Added 2x SN76477. Removed 'Unknown' dipswitch.

    - 0.37b12: New filtering code for the audio mixer. It is applied to audio streams generated at a sampling rate different from the sound card's one, improving quality. Some examples with a very audible difference are Vanguard.

    - 0.37b7: Added Samples sound (explsion and fire.wav).

    - 0.36b7: Added Custom sound.

    - 0.34b8: Added speech roms.

    - 0.34b4: Nicola Salmoria added clone Vanguard (Centuri). Changed parent description to 'Vanguard (SNK)'.

    - 0.34b1: Added proms ($0, 20 - foreground and background colors).

    - 0.29: Valerio Verrando added high score saving to Vanguard.

    - 0.28: Nibbler and Vanguard are back to (hopefully) normal speed.

    - 0.27: Thanks to Brian Levine's freely available Rockulator, Andrew Scott was able to added sound support to Vanguard. The Energy shields in Vanguard now work. Vanguard now run at half their previous speed. Is this the correct one? Added sound roms (sk4_ic51/ic52).

    - 0.16: Nicola Salmoria added joystick support to Vanguard.

    - 0.14: Brad Oliver and Mirko Buffoni added 'Vanguard' (SNK 1981). Based on Brian Levine's Vanguard emulator. Game is playable with wrong colors and no sound. Runs on hardware similar to Nibbler. Control: Arrows = Move around and S, D, E and F = Fire. Nicola Salmoria fixed bug which sometimes caused 6502 games not to run (actually they did run, but interrupts didn't happen).

    - 30th July 1996: Dumped Vanguard (SNK).

    - 0.222: READ/WRITE macros removal [Osso].

    - 0.217: Increased M6502 CPU clock speed to 1411125 Hz for fantasyu, nibbler, pballoon and vanguard to match available schematics. Insert wait states when reading from upper memory [AJR].

    - 0.207: Fixed music playing incorrectly in most SNK6502 games since MAME 0.199. Removed MACHINE_CONFIG macros [Osso].

    - 0.206: Removed GFXDECODE MCFG macros [Vas Crabb]. Removed TIMER MCFG macros [Osso].

    - 0.204: Eliminated unnecessary address space argument from handlers (audio\snk6502.cpp) [AJR]. Removed MC6845 MCFG macros [Osso].

    - 0.199: Eliminated machine().device. Removed some tag lookups. Added more device finders [Ryan Holtz]. Improved 'SNK6502 Custom Sound' encapsulation and fixed BGM. Frequency/rate should be set in config, not reset handlers. Speech should be moved into a separate device for the games that have it. Probably should be specialisations for Sasuke vs. Commander and Satan of Saturn. Not all games have three channels [Vas Crabb].

    - 0.186: Added audio\snk6502.h.

    - 0.162: Added save state support to SNK6502 driver [Osso].

    - 0.154: Changed 'snk6502 Custom' to 'SNK6502 Audio Custom'.

    - 0.152: Adjusted Nibbler board clock rate to use actual known master clock and a logical divisor. Still needs 100% verification from actual PCB but this fixes an issue with speed of game and sound effects not matching video output (specifically when snake is first drawn in 3 parts - the sound effect now match the drawing) [Tafoid].

    - 0.150: Modernized snk6502 device [Osso].

    - 0.144u2: Angelo Salese fixed bogus irq mask bit in SNK6502 HW games (IRQ mask bit was masking BOTH lines before).

    - 0.129u4: Changed 'Custom' sound to 'Rockola Custom'.

    - 0.129: Phil Bennett correctly setup the MC6845 device in the Rockola driver. Changed VSync to 60Hz.

    - 0.126u4: Added includes\rockola.h.

    - 0.122u8: Cleaned up the Rockola driver. Fixed dipswitches for all games. Added notes about the games [Stephane Humbert].

    - 0.113u2: Changed VSync to 61.246745 Hz.

    - 0.88u7: Improved sample support for Rockola driver [Mame32Plus]. BUT corrected music tempo (not confirmed Satan of Saturn and clone), adjusted music freq (except Satan of Saturn and clone), adjusted music waveform, supported playing flag for music channel 0 and supported HD38880 speech by samples (sndhrdw\rockola.c).

    - 0.81u5: Rock-ola improvements [Curt Coder]. More cleanup. Added SN76477 interfaces to other games, not connected yet, needs discrete sound expert. Added Vanguard SHOTB sound effect.

    - 0.33b5: Merged zarzon.c with rockola.c driver.

This means the 3 lives variation is closed and the new one you are submitting to like the 2021 spring submission your score beats, are both correct because it's the 3 lives track that is closed??

I am not sure where I am not correct with the sourced data I put here in my post.

I totally want to review and approve your score but I didn't understand by reading through the rules.
Will gladly retract anything that isn't there.

This other recent MGL 50 Vanguard score was accepted earlier this month on the same track.

I would also add again that this track weighs towards the expert skill index for Vanguard overall.

I hold the MAME WR on Vanguard but I am #3 on expert skill because of this. Keeping this track closed to myself and others now would seem to give an unfair advantage to other players who played in this earlier tournament that could stay ahead on the expert skill index no matter how high I score in the regular WR track without being able to submit on this one...which is one of my many issue with the way that is computed.

If the general rules and the admins and players have ruled it ok, and it's simply not written on the page, I am sorry for bringing it up in the first place.

Finished viewing it before I had seen the track rules, and carefully reading now since I had surprises in the past weeks I saw the mention it was closed and wondered why. This should be edited out, or things noted to make it official.

I was wondering if I could submit my previously accepted Vanguard MAME WR performance of 740,740 points for this track since I scored 309,480 on my first life that game using this same romset...I would have earlier but I thought this track was closed given the wording. But it also weights towards the expert skill index so I wonder how it could be fair to exclude players who want to compete for that but are not able to submit to this track to do so.

When MGL 50 came up and featured this game I noticed that I was lower than other players on the "expert skill index" for Vanguard overall because I haven't submitted and arcade performance...nor on this track...despite having much higher scores than those ahead of me on the expert index.

It looks like Robert Macauley already successfully submitted an MGL 50 performance for one life on this track that John is trying to do now as well on January 8th of this year.
    https://www.twingalaxies.com/showthread.php/240825

So is this track closed for submissions outside the old tournament it was created from or not?

If so I would vote yes for John and then submit my own one life performance for this track if that's the case even though the score is a bit older.

I also did a 564,850 point arcade format game in the last Grinkfest Tournament that was verified by Aurcade...but sadly no video to share.

    Input appreciated.
