There is a lot of time between 1:05 and 2:45 where you appear to avoid collecting diamonds while also sometimes collecting diamonds.

If there is a technique that can net more lives than you lose, whether or not you choose to collect the rewards, then it is leeching.

Can someone elaborate to me how extra lives are earned in this game?

Nevermind they’re just not dropping diamonds. And lives are earned only through pickups (had to text someone about that). I’m still watching but that part seems good.

Yeah lives are set in chests, but they can "respawn" so the challenge states I can only pick them up once. There are a total of 8 extra lives, and you start with 3, so you can have 11 lives total (but only 9 at a time).

For my run this translated into:
-Start with 2 Lives
-2 Lives in The Himalayas (1st trip) [4]
-2 Lives in the African Mines (1st trip) [6]
-Lost 5 lives on The Moon [1]
-2 Lives in Transylvania (2nd trip) [3]
-2 lives in The Amazon (2nd trip) [5]
-Lost 5 lives on The Moon [0]

Yes, someone else finally discovered this little gem of a technique! I was meaning to do this about 4-5 years ago but never got around to it. Congrats on this! The only bad part about this strategy is that it will literally come down who gets the best RNG on the diamond drops at some point for the top spot.
