The strategies used to marathon these games are so complex, it makes me wonder if the original designers were brilliant, or just banging out a game. My guess is they were banging out games, and the brilliance is with the extreme gamers who through perseverance and insight manage to conquer the game itself.

My guess is the marathoners put more effort into studying the game than did the original game designer. It is like a cold war, stretched out over 40 years.

the strategy to marathon the game, is just the strategy to complete the game combined with endurance. However, that said, simply beating the game, yes, was meant to be diffciult. They were there to take your quarters, not offer you a good time. Consoles were meant to be beaten, arcades were meant to drain money. It shows a real sense of fairness though that they made marathoning at least a possiblity. Maybe tapping into the gambler logic? you dont mind paying out on occasion if it motivates others to play?

now mind you, one step further, yes i have to take the complexity further. but i'm not just marathoning it, i need to marathon it at top speed now that Lauren pushed the score so far.

I dont need to understand all the complexisites before. I just needed to know the bare minimum to marathon it. She's pushed the game far enough though, that now yes, for Tapper you do need to know all the details if you want first place.

However, if you just want to marathon the game for 12 or whatever, the above video tells you all you need to know.

I bet the programmers just made the game, tried to make it hard. No grand strategy involved. They were mass producing these games, tight schedules, etc.

i have to think for the great games they had at least some concept, otherwise it would either be too easy, or outright impossible.

for example, in tapper, they had to at least know it was time management and strategy as opposed to pure reflex and speed. the tactics/strats to maximize points per second i'm inclined to agree with you and think those strategies werent designed in, so much as side effects of the existing design. the fact it requires time managment though i have to think was intentional.

they could've made it pure reflex where the beers are essentailly bullets and the customers enemy ships. it could've been done as a shooter just reskinned as beer. but the holding of the beer, the throwing back based on your decison to serve in the first place. the slowed sipping versus gulping varying by customer. I have to think that was specifically to focce it be time managment

granted, who knows, maybe the just got lucky.

fun to think about for sure. whatever the history, backstory and reason though, i can tell you that going forward this is how to play it
