possible q*berts qubes pseudo kill screen on coleco visoin?

my last two games came close to the record and then froze. obvoius the record is also close to the record making me wonder if that also froze or if duncan just stopped there voluntarily. gonna keep playing and get more videos for a larger sample size to study but putting this out there in case any coleco buffs already have the answer. thx for any help

Found this video showing a higher score than the current TG record

interesting it just ends there wonder why the video cut off. also curious is my games are also about 30 minutes (i'm scoring slower). i wonder if the time is somehow related? that seems unlikely.

it does at least demonstrate a much higher score is certainly possible though so thx for that

Here's some forum posts about the ROM having issues due to bad dumps

i only use real carts but still that might give a clue

Post #28 in that link mentions freezes on an actual cart.

    Apparently, it's a common issue:

    https://atariage.com/forums/topic/245550-qbert-qubes-freezes-up/

"There is an unresolved bug in the game that cause occassional lock-ups. A reason or pattern as to why these lock-ups are occuring has not been identified.

This bug occurs on both the ColecoVision and ADAM Computers."

that link was perfect matt!!!!!! they start assuming its bad dumps but go on to establish its the cart itself

ok so its a known issue, but the never found the pattern. onto the next phase of the mystery then

haha i typed before refreshing, just finished the thread

well i'm definiltey good enough to beat the record and it doesnt seem like it should take too many tries to not get unlucky. i'd like to find the pattern but i'll settle for resetting and redoing till i get a non glitched game.

its a pitty this makes marathons impossible. not that that was ever a plan. but it also means really any top level competiion becomes more about who can get furthest without a bug, thats unfortunate. if this title ever becomes competitive it may need to be a speedrun if its to be anything other than a luck test

The obvious sign in older games is some counter getting too high & flipping back to zero thanks to CPU maths. I haven't watched any footage but are you collecting too many men (happens to multiple games, so seems the obvious starter), perhaps?

I had lost a few guys so not that. Also every time you kill the rat with the same life in same level it’s less points so obviously a counter there yet that doesn’t appear to be it

I think it has to be some complex combination and not any one thing alone

I have really taken a liking to this game over the last year but damn, its a mind bender compared to the original. Probably why I keep coming back for more?

another thing that makes it bad for a business but good for a die hard fan is you actually dont get better by practiciing! you get better by turning the game off analyzing, doing math and figuring out how to deal with things then memorize your answers. things happen to fast on game to think. so really most of my training time was off game just thinking

Could be something similar to the bug in CV Burgertime, where an overflow somewhere causes a crash and soft reboot of the machine. One of these days I'll figure out what it is exactly :)

well yes, theres no way this is a feature and has to be a bug and overflow is a pretty common programming mistake. there are other bugs

of course that could occur but you're speculating the same thing barthax did just with more technical terms and i agree its a good place to start

not sure if it makes a difference, but it is a freeze and not a reboot. its effectively a pause. that also makes me wonder if it somehow access a pause feature incorrectly or if it somehow accesses the code meant to pause all the enemies when you get the green ball and instead pauses q*bert as well infinitely.

you know i'm assumign the pause is infinite. i should try leaving the game on overnight next time it happens as well as trying a bunch of button combos. so busy trying to figure out what triggers it and how to avoid it that i never thought to consider finding a way to undo it
