atari controller pedantic adjudication question

so i can only clean my paddles so much, and each time it seems to help less and less

in the case where paddle 2 has less jitter than paddle 1, would you approve a single player score, were to players were selected, all of player 1's lives were killed, and player 2 paddle was used?

if the concern is case by case, ok, then i'll specifically ask about kaboom

Ah yes, the Galaga/Freeway Exemption(tm). I have no problem with it whatsoever. I dont believe playing in the player 2 position gives anyone any scoring, tactical, or strategic advantage other than perhaps Freeway, but for Freeway, it is explicitly allowed in the rule-set, so even Freeway isnt an issue for me.

I have to say I am somewhat uncomfortable about this. I know the hardware is getting worn out, hard to come by. I'll say publicly that I won't complain if you do it. I'll leave it up to the other adjudicators to chime in.

My recommendation is to focus more on repairing the hardware.

is there a reason you'd uncomfortable with official original hardware that just happens to be designated the number 2 controller instead of the number 1? its not like a glitch or unexpected use is being discovered. the second controller was meant to be used

this is not a rhetorical question, its a real one. i'd rather argue it all out here and deal with all the points rather than deal with in adjudication after a 4 hours score is done

Rewire the paddles to swap 1st and 2nd player. Oh wait, then it would be modified/non-original.... rejected!!

yet replacing the potentiomater (probably what i'll eventually be forced to do) noone would notice or complain about....

You hit a point where you can totally dismantle and clean every little part, but it doesn't help. It's worn down too much. I used paddle 2 for my Circus Atari scores from years ago. More recently, I've also gone the "F player 2" route, and did a rewire to paddle 1...I'm a lawbreaker!!!

There is no difference between player 1 and player two on this game. You could use a trackball if it worked and I'd be fine with that.

thx guys. hopefully it wont come down to that. in fact im purposely practicing on player 2 just so that i'll wear that one out and player 1 will stay good.

So, I was thinking more about this today, and the more I think of it, the more I support players either using the Player 2 paddle *or* cutting the wires of the set and switching the two paddles of the set, rewiring them accordingly. It is still as original as you can get from a hardware perspective (all OEM parts) and is still adding zero functionality to the controller that would not otherwise be available on an initially functional set of paddles. The term "Modified controllers" informs me that such modifications alter or add to normal functionality. Implementing *either* solution discussed above doesn't.

You can also just take the paddles apart and switch the pots between the two paddles. You could also by a new 1m ohm pot that has the same configure and do that.

If your question was directed towards me, it is not the hardware that makes me feel uncomfortable. It is the playing as player two and having to kill off the first player.

Some games have different behaviour for the players (more modern games), which is why I said I would leave it up to the experts and not complain about it.

If people can use a genesis controller, I don't see why you could not do a hardware repair.

Just don't show up with a steering wheel for button controls though. That would be dumb.
