Safe spot tape on tv spirit of game question

Comments

I'm planning on doing a mini marathon (7hrs, not technically a marathon) of atari space jockey. Pretty sure what i wanna do is fine but i'd rather have it explicilty community approved before I throw away 7 hours of my life

There is a safe spot (maybe more) thats needed for breaks in a 7 hour game. I'd like to use tape, or in my case a wonder woman sticker to identify the spot. The argument against i imagine is "spirit of the game" but i have multiple arguments for

    1. With direct feed obvioulsy you cant stop such things so it seems weird to make rules that cant be verified
    2. We know Todd outright admitted to doing it with barnstorming and it was approved. I realie invoking todd's name may not be the real winnig argument to most people, but the point is he was honest about the maneuveur and refs were fine with it, so there is some precedent to allow tape on the TV to help out
    3. I'd only be using it for safe spots/bathroom breaks. so its really not even about helping gameplay, its just about making sure i can take my breaks without peeing into a cup (which i'm willing to do but i know how crazy this community is, someone is gonna find a reflectoin of a reflection of a relfection and blade runner style enhance it to catch eurination in full glorious video so i'd prefer not)

if people arent prepared to explicitly say tape across the baord is fine, then i really would be satisfied just hearing i can use this for breaks in space jockey in particular

Steve Weibe used grease pencils to map out his Donkey Kong elevator bounce patterns.

I have no issue with doing this for pee breaks. Sounds better than having to use a bucket or something gross.

Similar to the drugs test and "original controller" scenarios: direct feed would never provide a method to provide evidence to confirm/deny. If it all submissions can't be held to the same standard, the acceptable lesser standards be the level playing field.

And I think it goes without saying that official world record guidelines for marathons include 5 minutes breaks per hour (if possible in the game through accumulated lives). Nobody wants to see gamers dying from lack of hydration or pee breaks.

Whatever is whatever to me, really, I don't know, and I don't make the rules, nor am I all that sharp.

Pretty sure the Weibe thing was to practice, I dunno.

    (Data-THOSE MOVIES AREN'T REAL!)

    :P

I get the direct feed thing, usually older systems have a "real TV" vid to accompany the direct feed, but def. not all.

I did, tho, in my limited awareness of the scene, that the tape thing was kinda snickered at?

Not saying it's not OK, just...

    Space Jockey?

That's like putting cheese on top of cheese.

Which, admittedly, I actually don't mind, haha, I do it myself as often as possible.

    :D

I dunno, Man. Whatever. You gotta pee and stuff, so whatever you gotta do to facilitate that, I guess!!!

likley laughed at indeed, in barnstorming in particular it really doesnt even much help probably hurts. if you have to look over at the tape instead of just looking at the screen you probably dont have the speed needed to pull it off regardless. the same can be said of space jockey i guess i could fairly easy learn how to line up with no tape at all, but its such an easy game that learning how to line up would actually be harder than the game itself lol so i'd rather not waste my time learning that

Did Weibe's actually submission have pencil markings or are we talking about a scene from King of Kong? I remember Todd using tape on Barnstorming, but that was also a demonstration from Chasing Ghosts.

I do have a question though. How can players take a break from marathons if there is no pause option or burning built up extra lives to take a break isn't an option?

Mark away man, for all we know it's just a sticker. It's not like the sticker is playing your game.

game specific ways like this. a safe spot for example as here. also, there are some games that dont have spots like asteroids on the atari, however if you build the max of 6 lives you can take roughly a 45 second break, thats enough time if the toilet is in the other room that you can run to it, pee a little, run back, and if that wasnt enough time to finish your peeing, rebuild your lives, rinse and repeat.

Your snapshot at the top shows the shelves in the reflection of the TV. Someone could line up their view of the TV to a specific reflection and give themselves "guidelines" even without the physical item on the screen. There's always something that someone will do to get an edge.

That's a good point. It's the sneaky ones like that you gotta keep an eye on and not rip the ones who outright ask.

Oh, Oh, this just occurred to me!

Not incredibly relevant, but somewhat on topic, I suppose...

No way in heck I'd remember what game, or even what I was trying to do perfectly, pretty sure was 2600, at least-

I had a speck of dust once on my TV, exactly in the right spot to give me a bit of visual reference.

Didn't bother cleaning it until I got the score I wanted.

    :D

Ah, you know me, there's a chance I'll remember someday, it's just not coming to me right now.

well when you do remmeber i'm disputing it on grounds of cheating ;)

seriously i'm just joking now cause it seems i yet again let my paranoid nature get the best of me. i knew for the most part this would be fine but i also anticipated a little bit of a fight. i appreciate theres no fight at all, and i plan to do my semi marathon soon.
