Lets discuss Pick Axe Pete

pretty proud of highest tgsap/video proof score on pick axe pete, but not only do i want first, i just plain wanna know if thers anything i dont know about the game, so i figured nows a good time for one of these posts where i try to find people to swap tips with

so lets lay out what seems to be random, what doesnt seem to be random, and how to deal with it

doors color -- other than cosmetics does doors color do anything? an indication on where the next missing gap is perhaps? anything at all other than the black door makes black foreground on the arleady black bkg so really black doors make the foreground invisible and should be avoided, but is there any further relevance of the color? not that i can tell but i dont wanna rule out some complex pattern, maybe door color combined with door position combined with points combined with who know what else makes a difference?

holes in deeper caverns -- the holes definitely affect strategy (more on that later as that needs a different strategy for each whole combo), but is there anyway to predict where they seem to randomly appear?

ladders -- ladders only appear on your current level. thats fine, ladders on another levle are useless to you so this was probably a programming choice to keep matters simple, it has the same net effects of ladders being aware though since theres no need to show/have ladders or anything else that you cant access. anyway, this means the ladders vertical position is easily determine, but what about their horizontal positoin? any pattern at all? any control based on your movements at all?

as for when a key or axe drops, seems to be random as well but not really concerned as these are easy enough to deal with when it happens.

strategy

1. when to advance to next level. Staying on the same level increases difficulty of boulders with speed and bounciness. Moving to next level makes things harder by introducing more floor holes. either way the game gets harder with bouncier rocks no matter what. The difficulty avoided by advancing levels is cumulative not instant, that is to day, its not like level 3 always starts at the same difficulty, the difficulty is based on your level and points, so advancing too soon or advancing too late has no real long term effect. it seems to be the most control you have is roughly if you keep at 100 pts per level you'll stay at the lowest difficulty. advancing any faster wont remove difficulty of boulders (but will increase difficulty of level pits) and increasing slower will increase boulder difficulty but not pit difficulty

2. where in the game to hang out. i prefer near the bottom. easier to get the axe which you tend to need more than the key both for points and to stay alive. yeah it might make getting the key a little harder, but i'd rather the easier axe near the botoom to keep me alive until i get a harder to grab bottom versus a hard axe at top where i'll die before i get the easy to get key. I onitced john marks took the opposite approach though and his score is pretty good, so who knows, perhaps hes figured out something i havent.

3. use ladders. staying on a ladder is the only i know to control it, a ladder cant move if you're on it. so if you like where a ladder is keep itt here. this gives more freedom of escape by ensuring you always have a ladder to climb

4. individual floor layouts -- way to many to cover here, plus its not just room i frankly havent learned how to tailor my strategy to various combos yet.

tactics
pretty much just jumping or ducking boulders. ducking is especially hard. i've been trying to make it more about strategy and avoiding needing these tactics but maybe thats why i'm running into a wall

well thats all i can offer, thats all i know, anything any of you can teach me?

the ladders i was wrong on, just had some really weird flukes i guess where they always stayed on my level (height) but that seems to only be true on level (board) 1 and even there its not guaranteed

i've also since learned you can only have 5 boulders out at a time. I've havent been able to make any functional use of that use knowledge but it is worth noting.

beat my low 900s submitted score with a high 900s unsubmitted. so i guess i learned a new thing (useless but still i learned) today and also i increased my score by more than 5%, either reason alone is enough to give the game one more day before moving on.

Bill. How many hours have you spent playing this game? Just curious.

And as a side curiosity, whats the most hours youve spent playing any game? And what is it?

i dont usually log in my hours, and i've come to realize any guess i make is way off. I mean i know how long my marathons were but thats a single session and it sounds like you're asking for a life cumulative which i honestly dont know. odd question, why do you ask?

Oh I’ve definitely put in thousands of hours on hearthstone and quite likely 100s on starcraft 2 and Warcraft 3. But that’s different. My magic the gathering between digital and cardboard is also no doubt in the thousands but I honestly don’t know if my chess is just hundreds or thousands

Dude do you remember that 90's PC game of MTG? Lord the hours I put into that one. You could have all the best cards :)

Actually I borrowed it in 2009 left it my Magic bag for a year never installed it and eventually broke the disc but I’m aware it exists and my pals loved it something like shandalaar I believe it was called

there was also a magic arcade I never saw or so I’ve been told

Shandalar that's the one. As you can imagine you can find it on abandonware sites and still run it if you can use or emulate DOS. Ok enough derailment I'll go back to lurking since I have no knowledge whatsoever about Pick Axe Pete

another tid bit, you can only have the axe or the key on screen, but not both at the same time. this is helpful since sometimes i was setting myself up to catch a key or axe in case it was released, knowing it wont be released since the othe one is still on screen removes the temptation to go into a risky situation for what i now realize is zero chance at a reward

Since when is just over an hour a marathon?

I'm asking because some games take many thousands of hours to get good at, and much more to master. So was just wondering how many hours you put into this? Obviously not as many as RTM :)

just over an hour isnt a marathon? are you legitimately that confused by my response? you asked about this game and followed up asking about any others. if asking two questions at a time and getting two answers a a time results in confusion perhaps just ask one at a time in the future

not sure why you're bringing rtm into this. theres enough organic drama going on to satisfy any desire you may have there, no need to manufactur new.

you may be disappointed to know rtm actually sent me a friendly email about pete and i sent a friendly reply, i also invited him to add whatever he may like here, so you wont be stirring up anything on this one

You're right. I got confused. My bad. I'll try your suggestion and only ask one question at a time in future. I really mean it when I say that I appreciate your condescending reply, it makes me a wiser person! Really.

a very close follow up, you can only have one at a time, meaning when rocks smash to create an item, if one is already on the screen a new one wont BUT also if you have none on the screen then rocks smashing have a 100% chance of droping either the axe or key (as far as i can tell, which one is random, unless of course you already have a key in which case only axes can drop).

this means we can predict with certainty when an item will drop. If boulders smash, and no item is currently on screen, an item will always drop. That is an "if and only if" "required and sufficient". items wont drop any other time, and they will drop every time that happens.

knowing for a certaintly when an item wont drop allows you to not takes risks setting yourself up on a "mabye" thats not even happening. knowing for a certainty when an item will drop lets you put yourself in positions you couldnt normally risk

interesting point on the floor drops. Basically, theres certain points that can fall out (well duh) but between them are points that remain, unless wholes on both sides appear. What this means is, two holes joined together is more than double one alone. That part of flooring between the two only disappers of the holes on both sides of it form. so its not an optical illusion, the growing holes really are larger than two individual holes combined
