Possible Rule Edit For Alex Kidd In Shinobi World

I discovered that if you defeat the final boss and then start a new game, your high score includes points from the final boss.

Here's a couple of screenshots from my submission for the fastest completion.

Entering the final boss with 58,000 points:

Starting a new game after beating the final boss with 68,200 points as the Hi-Score:

The Wii Virtual Console rules state:

No Continues Allowed!

Special Rules: If you get to the end of the game, you must allow yourself to be killed by the final boss as your score will not be visible if you beat it.

The Sega Master System rules state:

Leeching tactics is NOT allowed. You cannot finish the game to show your final score.

I think the rules for both consoles should be updated to something like:

No Continues Allowed!

Leeching tactics are banned!

Special Rules: If you beat the game, start new game and your score will be the score displayed next to "HI-SCORE."

What do you guys think?

    how are you lives affected?

basically i'm wondering if the game just loops and you can marathon it, or if it really is a bug that gives you points you shouldnt have

You know what, I think there should be a life limit. Otherwise, you can probably get the same life over and over to infinitely restart the level and get the same points over and over.

There's no timer that kills you, so if you die, it has to be from enemies or hazards.

There is no second loop/quest like on Castlevania or Contra.

so if you were at one life, or 3 lives, and restart you'll still start with the same lives regardless of how much you previously eneded? if thats the case i would agree this is a bug.

I dont like forcing people to lose though. can you mathemtically look at both scores to deduce what the actual score was?

There's no second loop. Once you beat the game, that's it. It starts like a brand new game, only difference is the HI-SCORE shows your current high score.

If it helps, my speedrun from the final boss at 9:28 (seen on the screenshot) to the end will show you what I mean.

If we went by the rules, my score would be 58,000 if I died at the final boss like the rules state. The boss gives 10,000 and it's decoys give 100, which results in the 68,200 when starting up a new game.

The point I'm trying to make here is that the final boss gives points at the end, so there is no need to die on purpose to show the score. The rules are wrong when it says that the score will not be visible if you beat the final boss. You have to start a new game to see your final score if you beat the final boss. Then the final score will be visible.

ok i never played the game (most expensive of the alex kidds and i dont do flash) so bare with me and sorry for my misreading above. please continue to correct if i still misunderstand.

Rules that are made just for verification we can and should change. For example camera requirements. Though a better analogy here might be the rule required to end you game in donkey kong after 1-1 if you want to submit for 1-1. Why kill your guy? that happens after the fact why not just continue so that you can submit to both? same here, people are gonna want to finsih the game, why force them to die just for verfiication purposes?

However, rules that affect gameplay and score should NOT be changed as that changes the playing field.

I dont mind saying you dont have to kill yourself, and in fact the donkey kong guys have set the precedent we can ignore such verification rules that dont affect game play. HOWEVER you should still submit the score from where it says to kill yourself, since getting the higher score from not killing yourself is an unfair advantage -- assuming I now understand correctly. As long as you can look at your final score, then minus the points the boss gives to determine your score where the rules say to end, its a level playing field. Maybe some updated rule like "if you do beat the boss you must subtract X from your score"

Is my understanding now correct? Would my suggested solution make sense?

    I understand what you mean.

So beat the game and subtract 10,000+(decoys x 100)

Boss is worth 10,000 and the decoys are 100 each.

Or to make things easier, why not just submit the score you have entering the final boss instead of dying at the final boss?

So the rules can be something like:

Special Rules: If you beat the game, your score will be the score you have entering the final boss.

In my case, I would submit 58,000.

if i'm understanding correctly that sounds good. Just change verification rules, not gamelay rules those are my two biggies. It sounds like you're fullfilling both so makes sense to me.
