When Trust and Deceit Collide in Speedruns

Check out this VICE article by Patrick Klepek about the speedrunning community's recent grappling with cheating and the long road to the truth. I think you'll see some parallels with other situations known to the TG community.

That was quite the story, and recap. Definitely pause for thought (pun intended).

    Thanks for sharing :)

alot of parallels amazing how often the same stuff is tried, and sometimes works

the bluff strategy is amazing "he must be innocent cause he'd be a fool to be guilty and do that" ummm, ever play poker "he must have a good hand he'd be crazy to bid that high if he didnt" um yeah... thats how it works. i've seen the bluff time after time "i must be innocent, i'd be stupid to have cheated so sloppily" -- yep you're stupid

some earlier tgsap stuff this reminded me of. "help marp is lying about me". the similarity there is, he was only caught out of greed, had his cheating been less impressive scores likely noone would've done the extra scrutiny. the fool actually came to tg asking tg people to look into it to prove his innocence -- he was that confident. all that did of course was result in tg also banning him

been thinking about this abit how amazing the greed is and how that gets him

billy mitchel could've had all his scores, and still put himself in hall of fame, likely get all the same movies and appearances simply by making up the scores. but that wasnt enough. he had to make video and show it publicly, back then public viewing of vidoes was never required, but he just couldnt help himself. that extra brag is what caught him

On atari, lee caught space monkey, we still cant PROVE he cheated, but again, greed. he wasnt satisfied getting his scores though, he was so greedy he needed threm through right away and so used a second fake account to cheat the system and double vote, thats where his ban came from. if not for that greed and impatience he would've gotten away with it too.

its also why i agree with wiping all scores when only caught once. thats how we catch them. they're greedy and eventually screw up. if you just remove the one time they're caught then you give up a valuable tool in turning their greed against them

honestly i can think of a single person i supsect of anything who hasnt done it multiple times. theres never a "it was only once"
