Racing games and cutting corners

Have to ask. If the rules don't state anything about short cuts being allowed/not allowed, can you cut corners for a race? Going off track does hurt you IF you don't know what you are doing. Its kind of like Mario Kart. You can use your Mushroom or corner boosts at certain points and cut corners, but do it incorrectly and it slows you down big time.

The game I am asking about is GT Advance Championship Racing for the GBA. Nothing in the rules says you can/can't and there are no alternate tracks written to counter the first set of track rules. I know there was a big discussion about corner cutting/at least 1 wheel must stay on the track to count. However, If the game counts it as a lap IMO it counts as a lap. Just for context, I was able to beat the fastest time set by @jmb by over 5 seconds by cutting corners but there is some skill in gas braking involved to do it. Over shoot a single turn and you are screwed. What do you guys think?

If the track rules doesn't say no shortcuts/cutting corners and the game allows it as a lap then you're good to go buddy lol

What ragequit said is indeed the majority opinion of community. It's a lap if the game counts it as a lap and the track rules don't prohibit corner cutting.

While I do think there's room for some sim-type racers to have rules against dropping tires, I agree with the comments so far, if the game lets you do it and it's not glitched, it shouldn't be a problem.

Hate that game, BTW-I think you have to put in like, a 20 character code, every time you play...

    Ugh.

I was part of a long dispute for Gran Turismo 5 on the PS3. Most of the folks that chimed in didn't see any issue as the rules were not specific or explicit (depending on your interpretation) to prohibit using course cutting / short cuts. The counter argument was 'spirit of the game' for simulation style racers, is the lap really 'complete' if you course cut and eliminate part of the normal course. Ultimately, the dispute remains open and probably going to stay that way but there was some initially thoughts of pulling the time and creating a new track... again I doubt this will happen.

As a courtesy, I would reach out to the competitors of the track and solicit their interpretation of the rules. I saw that @Rogerpoco and @jmb submitted times for this game. It looks like in one of Roger's submission that he used course cutting techniques to set the fastest lap time. Since that time was submitted and approved and the rules are absent on use of course cutting / shortcut techniques, I think you're good to submit.

    For reference - here's Roger's run - https://www.twingalaxies.com/showthread.php/176254

I'm just thinking if a group of "purists" wanted to make tracks on, say an advanced F-1 game sometime in the future, with "spirit of the game" rules in place, that I could totally understand that as well.

Hehe, not sure if my own corner cutting was intentional, or just sucky driving, could have been either.

Not in the rules? Go cut crazy :)

The only person here that will give you a hassle about cutting corners, would be @kernzyp ...but his opinion doesn't count...lolllllllllll :P

Awesome. Just double checking. Iremeber that dispute and I remember the consensus as you guys say, if it's not on the rules it's okay. Guess I found my next game to attempt.

@Rogerpoco , I don think you have to enter that dumb password if you actually beat the game legitimately first haha...you big "unlock everything" password user.....I did it to hahahah

Ha-Man, I swear I'd be all in on the Gran Turismo, I just ain't spending a week of my life unlocking it!!!

    :P

Honest, tho, some of my proudest stuff is actually the Tiger Woods 2005 on PS2, where I spent weeks of in-game time earning every possible item-was a neat story, I had done that, in 2005, lol, and was ancient history.

Was a couple years into scoring here when my Son happened to find the memory card that had my dude still on it, was really a neat find.

Noticed you doing some golf, I need to check it out-I'm a natural Lefty, so I made my Guy that way, not realizing at the time how much of an advantage a Left handed golfer has over a Right handed golfer.

Courses are typically designed to usually make a Right hander "work" for a shot, which plays into the natural shot of a Lefty...

    :P

this was one of the larger more contentious arguments. as you can see, one side (the correct side) won, but make no mistake, you're asking for a big argument if you try it. you'll win, but you'll have a lot of headache along the way

I remember it. I believe my argument ( and everybody elses) was it's not in the rules, it's good. I also believe the "spirit of the game" was brought up. To which I remember saying that is up to the player. The point of "fastest" anything is to do it as fast as possible as long as the game recognizes it. Unless otherwise specified, it's free game. I still got a few more scenarios on Tiger Woods to do yet, then I'll probably hit this game up.

Sad side note, my battery for my GBA Everdrive died. Nobody has a CR 1220 battery in store. Some online shopping is to be had. Guess I have no choice but to enter the password now.

I watched a "Daytona USA" performance on YouTube not long ago in which the player got a fast lap by driving between the main course and the pit area...did not even think this was possible, but the game's program seems to allow for it. Still, I don't think this is in the spirit of the game...

  17. thegamer1185's Avatar

Spirit of the game is up to the person's interpretation. Going for the fastest possible time is the fastest possible time.

I said it a few times I do not like the spirit of the game even being written in the rules because it's worse than trying to figure out leaching versus point pressing. At least that argument has some context to it. Spirit of the game could mean you one-hundred-percent every time, or play the game however you feel because that to you is the spirit of the game and how it should be played.

personally to me the spirit of the game is to play the game however you choose to do it and whatever is the most fun for you within the rules.

Wow I heard the Saturn version of Daytona USA was garbage but that is on another level lol

I drove through the pits on my world record video on the Arcade platform. Had to do it to beat #1 as he probably also did it to achieve that time.

It takes skill on the arcade version as you have to be almost pixel perfect not getting onto the grass and bypass the invisible line that activates the pitstop. And you have to do that 8 laps in a row.
