What is the most glitched/worst programmed game you have ever played?

So there are some pretty bad games out there. As competitors we all know a glitch or awful programming can kill a run when it decided to kick in. I can honestly say, PGA Tour 96 for the Game Boy is the most frustrating game I have ever played.

I love a challenge. If a game is hard and it kicks my ass, I'm all for that. However, when a game becomes hard because you can't predict what the programming is going to do...especially in a game were accuracy is involved...it's a whole different level of frustration. If you screw up, it's on you. Period. No excuses, you can get better and correct the mistakes. When you are lining up a putt, hit the putt, and the ball goes in an exact straight line because the game can't recognize where your aimer is, it becomes frustrating. Now add this little bit of fun to the mix and you have an explosive outburst.

This is the drive I hit perfectly down the fairway, still rolling.

This is my perfectly hit drive splashing in another dimensions water hazard.

So it cost me one stroke to drop...which it dropped me behind the tree I never would have been behind had the shot been performed accurately by the game, effectively forcing me to avoid going for the green. So I lost 2 strokes that hole. Then it cost me another stroke because in my anger "I" made a mistake and hit one in a legit water hazard...followed up by 3 more horribly programmed missed putts.

So, what are your worst stories of poor programming/glitching costing you an amazing run??

thats actually an interesting question. you found a way to turn a few frustrating aspect of gaming (bad programming) into a game of itself, find the worst game. in the future i'll try to keep in mind which ones are the worst. i've been very upset with alot of intellivsion games, also spectravision who i think just made atari games has earned my disrespect.

i've never played cheetahmen for nes, but i've heard nothing but bad things about it.

I've been thinking about it the last few days while playing PGA Tour 96. I know of games that have glitches, but they are usually visual or don't affect the game play. Programming does what it's programmed to do, but in this game it doesn't make sense at all. Dragon's Lair is poorly programmed and has awful game controls, but it's not like you can't learn how to play with them or something changes mid game. It's the same game, you just need to learn all of the shitty bits of programming and where/when to jump etc. PGA Tour 96 literally doesn't allow that because every shot is slightly different. For example, and it just infuriates me every time it happens, did you know a tail wind will actually reduce the distance the ball goes if you hit it at full power??? I do now, randomly, haha. No one can prepare for that.

I've heard the same about Cheetahmen. Perhaps we should all start making a list of games with bad programming and glitches and then start talking about which one actually screwed with your game play the most. When a game lags in SHMUPS for example, I hate it because it's altering the game play. That's not a glitch or bad programming, but it's a part of it.

Not the worst by any means but these two are fun ones.

Next Tetris on DC gets wonky after you have been playing a while. Like it is going so fast it struggles to hold itself together. The music will get garbled and go in and out. Everything seems shaky. But my favorite thing, this only happened once, and I don't remember if it happened on my submitted run or not... after placing a block, the block just shot straight up off the top of the screen. The next block dropped and the game continued on as normal.

Second favorite, and I may still have this on video. Wild Snake on SNES. In the middle of a combo, everything just froze, but the points kept incrementing as if the combo was continuing. I let sit for like half an hour to see if would max out or roll over or anything but it never did so I got bored and turned it off. Fortunately I was able to legitimately beat RJF's score on a later attempt ;)

you know, specific bugs, even if not worse are interesting to catalog

i was playing master blaster on nes -- great game, and i dont know what i did but somehow when i came out of the tank to walk into the dungeon area i got thrown the wall. this didnt immediatley kill, but it brought me to a no win scenario where i was stranded on the platform and any attempt to jump off it would kill me, so there was no hope of getting all the way back around to the screen my tank was on

thats probably among the weirder ones

the was also a battle toads glitch on i think level7 (10 years ago) the level with like space ships or something. where the game just took over, the toad flew off s creen, became invincible, and the game went into an infinte loop where he just kept cruising along. the s core counter went up the whole time, so i suppose i maxed the game out.

I've started categorising my games in Steam. I guess I need a new category for games like this "glitched-as-****" to join my existing one:

Turns out there really are games that are so awful, even I won't play them a second time. :P

Good point. I appreciate any kind of Art/Movie/Video game. Even if they are bad, I still appreciate them for whatever unique qualities they have. I will never recommend or play PGA Tour 96 again unless I have to reclaim a record. I can't think of any other game like that.

Based on your description of it, I'd put PGA Tour '96 as an A or even AA game next to what I've got in that Steam category. :D I've yet to play it, mind you... it could go down to a B. :P

Oh, Barthax-I've kinda been trying to think of one for this discussion-how about that motorcycle game we played on ZX Spectrum, jumping over houses and stuff-that seems like it was kinda a programming mess, if I remember right?

LOL, great memory! I'm kicking myself I didn't think of that: Kikstart 2. If you can look past the colour bleed of any ZX Spectrum game, that is. :D
