  2. MAME History, "C" ROM sets

This page is a chapter in 'Game Exploring MAME history for TG rules'

A collection of notes from the legacy of MAME for checking INP files against rules.

cabal, cabalus

Note: two ROM sets are represented here with a changeover at 0.119u2.

MAME History:
- 0.119u2: Replaced 'Cabal (US set 1)' with an incomplete new Cabal version (World, Joystick version).
- 0.119u3: David Haywood fixed 'Cabal (World, Joystick version)' submission from previous release. Re-added 'Cabal (US set 1)' as 'Cabal (US set 1, Trackball version)'. David Haywood added clone Cabal (Alpha Trading). Changed description of clones 'Cabal (US set 2)' to 'Cabal (US set 2, Trackball version)' and 'Cabal (bootleg)' to 'Cabal (bootleg of Joystick version)'. Renamed (cabal2) to (cabalus2).
- 0.125u3: Added 'Coinage' dipswitch.
- 0.126u2: Fabio Priuli added DIP locations to Cabal.
- 0.133u1: Corrado Tomaselli verified/changed VSync to 59.6 Hz in Cabal.
- 0.145: Stephane Humbert fixed 'Bonus Lives' dipswitch in Cabal.
- 0.172: Caius added clone Cabal (UK, Trackball). Changed parent description to 'Cabal (World, Joystick)' and clones (Alpha Trading) to 'Cabal (Korea?, Joystick)', (US set 1, Trackball version) to 'Cabal (US set 1, Trackball)' and (US set 2, Trackball version) to 'Cabal (US set 2, Trackball)'.
- 0.227: Use interface to MSM5205 device for seibu_adpcm (audio\seibu.cpp). Fixed ADPCM clock [cam900]. Added hardware documentation. Added PROMs to Cabal (World, Joystick), Cabal (Korea?, Joystick), Cabal (UK, Trackball) and Cabal (UK, Joystick). Correct M5205 measurement [Guru]. Changed clock speed of the 2x MSM5205 sound to 375000 Hz.
- 0.230: Schedule all interrupt changes via timers to ensure proper ordering. Fixes the seibu sound issue in a more generic fashion (sound\ymfm.cpp) [Aaron Giles]. Implemented in-service lockout for IRQs (audio\seibu.cpp), prevent Cabal from locking up the sound CPU with an unacknowledged interrupt after reset. Fixes coins don't work when Demo Sound dipswitch is off [AJR].

captcommr1, captcomm

Note: two ROM sets represented here with changeover at 0.138u4.

MAME History:
- 0.126u4: Corrado Tomaselli verified and correct CPS1 refresh rate. Changed VSync to 59.610000 Hz.
- 0.138u4: Stefan Lindberg and The Dumping Union added Captain Commando (World 911202). Renamed (captcomm) to (captcommr1).
- 0.147u1: Changed CPS-1 video timings to SCREEN_RAW_PARAMS [Angelo Salese]. Changed VSync to 59.629403 Hz.
- 0.153: Cleanup (includes\cps1.h) [Osso]. Willow, Strider and Ghouls'n Ghosts have some changed factory setting defaults as stated from manual. Also noted differences in bonus live coverage where applicable [Tafoid]. Cleanup QSound. No practical changes here except that i removed support for LOG_WAVE raw sound filewriting. Updated soundstream before writing (tsk). Reg 3 is key on. Small fix to sample start and loop. Guru measured qsound music timing. Modified CPS1 video params [hap]. Eliminate pointless planar-to-chunky conversion of gfx ROMs, just decode them as-is [Alex Jackson]. Changed VSync to 59.637405 Hz.
NOTE: ioc1.ic7 ROM in parent set redumped at 0.193. This may create playback issues.

Extended Weaponry:
"When extended weaponry is desired additional coin(s) are required. Extended weaponry gives the players a greater area of destruction."
- Quote from the manual, Page 2, mid-left. See also DIP switches at bottom-right of Page 2 and Table 1 at the top-left of Page 3.

When starting a game the visual difference of the Extended Weaponry is subtle. With one credit the "DEPOSIT COIN" message is displayed above "PRESS PLAYER 1"; with two credits the "DEPOSIT COIN" message disappears.
Comparison using MAME 0.250: left is 1 credit, right is 2 credits:

Service Mode:
Inside MAME, the Japan version is in a different driver from the World version due to sufficient differences in otherwise similar hardware. The BIOS interface runs the same for both styles.
World: Typical "TMNT"-style hardware.
Japan: Typical Konami "Twin16" hardware.
Service Mode reflects the local configuration after playback ends, not the recording. Service Mode is accessed by enabling the DIP Switch which can be toggled with the Service Mode Button (F2) followed by a reset thus cannot be recorded in an INP. A series of test screens are presented, progressing with P1 Start button. The test screens cycle while the Service Mode DIP switch remains enabled and are exited after the visual test pattern if not.
