MAME History:
- 0.127u2: Nicola Salmoria merged HAL21 with SNK driver and fixed palette decoding of early SNK games (HAL21). The least significan bits were assigned incorrectly. Stephane Humbert fixed dipswitches and inputs for HAL21 and clone (Japan). Changed Z80 CPU1/2 clock speed to 3350000 Hz and the 2x AY-3-8912A to 2MHz. Fixed sp16_tiles rom loading. Removed 2nd coin slot.
- 0.138u2: SftiKDL0 fixed reversed 'Cabinet' dipswitch in HAL21.

The changes at 0.127u2 to the DIP switches combined the old "Bonus Life" and "Bonus Type" switches into one logical combination setting of just "Bonus Life".
Bonus settings 0.127 and prior:
Bonus Life: 20000 60000 / 40000 90000 / 50000 / 120000 / None
Bonus Type: Every Bonus Set / Second Bonus Set
Bonus settings 0.128 onwards:
Bonus Life: 20k 60k 60k+ / 40k 90k 90k+ / 50k 120k 120k+ / 20k 60k / 40k 90k / 50k 120k / None
The "Bonus Type" has no effect when the "Bonus Life" setting has a value of "None", so 0.128 only presents one "None" value.
The 0.127 "Every Bonus Set" value equates to those 0.128 settings having a third "+" option numeric
The 0.127 "Second Bonus Set" value equates to those 0.128 settings having no third option numeric.
The Difficulty DIP switch was changed from numeric values to text.
0.127 and prior: Easy /2 / 3 / 4
0.128 onwards : Easy / Normal / Hard / Hardest
The "Special" DIP switch was renamed to "Game mode". The "Special" setting of "Normal" became "Game mode" of "Demo Sounds Off". Otherwise the same feature options are presented (slightly different order).
The Cabinet type determines whether 2-player games are played simultaneous co-operatively or separately competitively. Upright will display players simultaneously both heading in the same direction. In Cocktail mode players will take turns playing in opposite directions. These differences can be seen in the above example picture which also shows the "Second Bonus Set". Note: for versions 0.128 through to 0.138 (inclusive) this DIP switch has the values labelled in reverse.

Note: two ROM sets represented here with changeover at 0.147u4.
MAME History:
- 0.147u4: ANY, hap and The Dumping Union added 'Head On (bootleg on dedicated hardware)'. Added some notes (sound and other ports) [Robbbert]. Note: Italian bootleg of Head On, by EFG Sanremo (late 70s to early 80s). The game title is unknown. Someone wrote FOOL RACE on a piece of tape on the PCB, but that's not really credible. It's on much cheaper hardware than the original: 8080 instead of Z80, and less RAM needed with the gfx tiles being on ROM. Renamed (headonb) to (headon1).
- 0.222: Changed 'Head On (bootleg on dedicated hardware)' from a clone of 'Head On (2 players)' to parent 'Fool Race'. Note: Fool Race is an Italian imitation of Head On, by EFG Sanremo, it's not a bootleg. The game title is Fool Race, confirmed by one of the programmers. It's on much cheaper hardware than the original [Osso, hap]. Added 'Lives' dipswitch. Fixed rom names. Renamed (headonb) to (foolrace).
