The Commodore 64 was released in August 1982 and has been listed by Guinness as the highest selling single platform of all time with estimates between 10 and 17 million units. The Commodore 64 is often referred to by the monikers C64 and CBM64 with the C often being stylised using the logo of Commodore International.

The C64 is a successor unit, but not compatible with, the Commodore VIC-20 and Commodore PET. The 64 in the name references the 64kibibyte size of the RAM of the unit.

Submissions at Twin Galaxies
For the main scoreboard, the different regions of Commodore 64 are split into NTSC and PAL as there are known timing differences. Track names are prefixed with these indications. Additionally, emulation tracks exist on the scoreboard and are prefixed with EMU.

In the 2000s, the participation at Twin Galaxies for emulated Commodore 64 submissions was limited to the VICE emulator. As the VICE emulator defaulted to emulating a PAL region C64, all emulated submissions by default represent only PAL region C64 emulations. This expectation continues unless otherwise stipulated in the rules of the individual track.
