Top 5 Avengers & Marvel Games From Before Fortnite's Infinity War
By Jeff Kotuby ·
Marvel characters have been featured in video games since the days of the Commodore 64, and into 2018 with the announcement of the Marvel/Fortnite crossover. We list our 5 favorite games that feature some of Marvel's superheroes.

On the tails of Avengers: Infinity War, it was announced that the popular game franchise Fortnite would be having a Marvel-themed crossover event. We thought it would be awesome to put together a list of our favorite video games that feature Marvel characters.
5. X-Men (Arcade)
Welcome to DIE! The original X-Men arcade game, released in arcades in 1992, has no doubt become a cult favorite since its release. Whether you’re a Colossus yell sort of person, a “Nothing Moves the Blob” person, or an oh-so-quotable Magneto sort of person, X-Men delivered the humor and some pretty decent beat-em-up action along with it. But we’re really all here for the cheesy quotes, so check out this compilation put together by YouTuber XFactor1111:
4. Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage (Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis)
The next comic-styled beat-em-up on our list is the 1994 classic Maximum Carnage. Known for being one of the only Super Nintendo games to feature a red cart, Maximum Carnage united Spider-Man and Venom together in order to stop Carnage, the wild red symbiote, who is rumored to be the villain in the new film, Venom. Whether playing alone or with friends, Maximum Carnage was a blast to play. Below is Twin Galaxies member Joshua Theno’s world record playthrough of Maximum Carnage:
3. X-Men: Children of the Atom (Arcade, Sega Saturn, MS-DOS, Sony Playstation)
The first fighting game on our list is the one that started it all. One of the most ambitious gaming crossovers in history (before Marvel and Fortnite, of course) was Marvel and Capcom. While we’re all familiar with the Marvel vs. Capcom series, Children of the Atom (COTA) was the one to kick off the series. Developed by Capcom and first released in arcades in 1994, COTA set the standard for the “Versus-style” gameplay. If you’ve never seen the game before, here’s over an hour of raw gameplay, courtesy of r/salty admin PielordX:
2. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance series (Pretty much every system you can think of.)
Before The Avengers, we had Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. The Ultimate Alliance series brought Marvel back to its beat-em-up-roots, with an added RPG system that gave players additional layers of depth to really personalize their experience. The games see players create themes of four of their favorite Marvel superheroes and battle through two compelling storylines: an original story where Dr. Doom is the main villain in the first game, and a unique telling of the Civil War storyline in the second. Never seen either game? Check out YouTuber The Completionist play through the first (above) and second games (below):
1. Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 (Sony Playstation, Xbox, Dreamcast, Nintendo 64)
Bear with us, we promise that we’re not tugging your leg. One of early-2000s gaming’s biggest secrets was the inclusion of a certain Marvel character (who you’ve seen a few times on this list already) being buried somewhere in the second Tony Hawk game. The rumblings captivated the pre-social media Internet for some time, until someone finally discovered how to unlock Spider-Man. To do so, you must complete the game with a custom created skater. Check out how insane Spider-Man is in this game:
It’s almost not fair how cool his Special Tricks look. And look, we know it’s not a Marvel game, but it’s arguably the best game (and best soundtrack) on this list by far, and it has a Marvel character in it, so it tops the list.
If you’re not quite sure why we made this list, then you must’ve missed the news that Marvel and Fortnite are starting an Avengers: Infinity War collaboration event soon. So, get caught up with the latest info, then download Fortnite (if you haven’t already) and get ready to harness the power of Thanos himself!
