How to Download and Begin Arena of Valor on Android, iOS, & Switch

Mobile gaming has its ups and downs, but there are few games that are worth combing through the millions of clones and trash. Arena of Valor is one of those games, one that has a massive player base and a large esports scene. For those looking for a quick way to download the game and get going with it, we’ve got the easy path to knowing nothing about this mobile MOBA to at least being able to have some fun online or with nearby friends. The game is also coming soon to Nintendo Switch, so now is a great time to learnthe game and join a growing, competitive community.

Download

Arena of Valor can be found on either the App Store for Apple iOS devices or on the Google Play Store for Android devices. The game is made by Tencent Games, so be sure to find the store page that is official. On iOS, version 8.0 or later is required, but it is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod so pick a preferred device or play using the same account on any and all. Once downloaded, the game will update with the latest files automatically.

From here simply create an account either through Game Center, Google Play, or Facebook whatever is most convenient. This is how you’ll be able to log in on other devices.

The Switch version won't be out for a while, but here's how it'll be available. To download Arena of Valor on the Switch, click the eShop icon on the home screen. Then either check the latest releases tab around when it comes out, or go to the search icon to look for it directly. Then just click the download button, wait for it to the load and launch it to create an account. There hasn't been a confirmation yet if accounts will transfer from the mobile version, but it's likely and should be as easy as logging into said account.

Learning to Play

Arena of Valor is a traditional Multiplayer Online Battle Arena similar to League of Legends of DOTA2, but uses a touch joystick to move rather than clicking around the map. The game will first introduce basic mechanics through a tutorial, so take the time to play with how the character moves and using abilities.

The general game type is a 5v5 with three lanes, like most MOBA games where the teams try to destroy each other’s towers and their base. Level up by taking out minions, jungle monsters, or other heroes. This also builds up gold which can be used to buy items for added power. Each match is contained though, so any gold or levels won’t transfer to other matches.

There are lots of handy videos on the official Arena of Valor website to get started. While it seems overwhelming, there is a lot to enjoy in a game that relies on player vs player action. Climbing the ranks, playing with a team, it’s all super addictive and can be adrenaline pumping.

Free to Play

Arena of Valor is a free game, but more characters and skins can be bought quicker with vouchers which are purchased with real cash. For the most part, skins (character costumes that are only for looks, not game stats) can only be bought with vouchers, unless there is an event going on. Characters can be earned eventually through gold though, so those not wanting to spend any cash certainly have the option.

Characters are constantly being rotated into free-to-play, so use these heroes to try something new or earn a trial through the various quests which are tasks like “Win 3 Games” or reach an overall player level. The player level is essentially the player’s experience with the game. A higher level grants access to better Arcana, which are like Masteries in League of Legend that add a few smaller bonuses for further customization. Early on though, Arcana doesn’t have to be fretted over, but each slot should have something in it, so make sure after each player level to add something to it.

DC Heroes fit rather well into a MOBA. If only they could get movies right.

The other major appeal of Arena of Valor are the DC Comics playable heroes like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Joker and more. These heroes add a bit of familiarity to the world and can make for good starting points once they are unlocked.

For those comfortable enough to jump into the higher levels of play, Ranked Matches allow for players to steadily climb the rankings to fight the top players. While this appeals to the most competitive of players, one can also easily setup a local match, so jumping into a local or online tournament can be just as appealing, especially in a physical meetup. Simply hit a match type and use the panel to the right to invite a friend, a recent player, or someone nearby. Check out local game clubs or groups to see if you can start competing in your area.

Lastly, those looking for success in Arena of Valor just need to spend some time with it. Try out lots of different heroes, learn how they play, find new builds to try out. It’s all about experimentation, finding what works, adapting strategies for success, and working as a team.
