Valve Reveals How Many PC Gamers Use Gamepads, And Which Kinds They Choose
By Zac Cameron ·
An internal hardware survey has shown exactly how many Steam users opt for a gamepad, and the most popular ones out there.

One of the many benefits to PC Gaming comes with the added customization the players can do with their games. Whether it be modding the titles themselves, or finding workarounds to existing problems, PC gamers have enjoyed a level of customization near unparalleled to this day. A recent hardware survey by Steam has also looked at the ways in which PC gamers play their games, looking at the number of players opting to use something other than the standard mouse and keyboard combination, as well as what kind of controllers are most popular.
First, let’s look at the number of players using controllers with their PC games. Since 2015, more than 30 million players have registered at least one controller, and more than half of that number have registered more than one controller. The breakdown of the controllers used is fascinating as well, with a lot more controllers being used than you might think.

We can see that a very large percentage of players are using Xbox 360 controllers, with PlayStation 4 coming in second with less than half the number of users. Xbox and PlayStation dominate the controller scene, but there is 8% remaining that is broken up into a very varied group, such as Flight sticks, Rockband Instruments, even SNES controllers.
You can read the full breakdown, including the rise of Steam’s own controllers, on the official blog post here. Let us know in the comments below what kind of controller, if any, you like to use when gaming on PC.
