Overwatch Game Director Jeff Kaplan confirmed during Blizzcon 2018 that Echo will not be Hero 30 despite plenty of fan theories.
Blizzcon 2018 had plenty of exciting new content for Overwatch fans to learn about with the reveal of Ashe as Hero 29 for Overwatch, and the debut of the newest animated cinematic in Reunion that focused on McCree and a brand new character to the Overwatch universe, Echo. However, despite plenty of fan theories and speculation regarding Echo as a possible choice for hero 30, Overwatch Game Director Jeff Kaplan confirmed that she would not be hero 30.
The Reunion cinematic saw McCree take on Ashe and other members of the Deadlock Gang in order to gain control of a mysterious piece of technology. After his victory McCree opened up the pod which then saw Echo, a character who looks to be a truly advanvced Omnic, appear out of the piece of technology. McCree then stated that he believes that Echo is more vital to the new mission of Overwatch than he is.
With the discovery of the importance that Echo plays in the lore of Overwatch, many members of the community instantly began to speculate that Echo would be the next hero to added into the first person shooter following Ashe. However, while speaking with Atlanta Reign streamer Fran at Blizzcon 2018, Jeff Kaplan explained that while Blizzard has grand plans for her to be a hero in the future she will not be hero 30 for Overwatch.
Unfortunately for players who were excited at the thought of new character being hero 30, everyone's favorite developer for the Blizzard esports title has confirmed that the community will have to wait a while before they are able to hit the battlefield with whatever abilities she will bring to the game.
It remains to be seen when exactly Jeff Kaplan and the rest of the Overwatch development team will decide to introduce Echo into the title. With Echo having now established herself as a key character in the lore of Overwatch, it is highly likely that she is one of the six heroes that were confirmed to be currently worked on by Blizzard at Blizzcon 2018.
