After offering a chance at six Legendaries during the month of December, Pokemon Go is upping the ante in January and February by adding two more rare Pokemon into the mix.

Pokemon Go's January and February Field Research Rewards are Legendary

Pokemon Go’s Field Research Breakthroughs are about to get even more crowded, as the December offering of six Legendary Pokemon is coming back in both January and February...only this time with two extra Legendaries thrown into the mix.

For those that don’t recall, every Field Research Breakthrough a player achieved in December earned them an encounter with one of six Legendaries: the Kanto birds Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres as well as the Johto dogs Raikou, Entei, and Suicune. January and February will continue to offer those six, but starting January 1 the Johto birds Lugia and Ho-Oh will be joining them in the random encounter pool.

The year 2019 is around the corner, and it’s already looking to be legendary! When you reach a Research Breakthrough in January and February, you’ll have the chance to encounter several Legendary Pokémon, including Lugia and Ho-Oh! pic.twitter.com/r0Q6DTqoOD

This marks the first time Lugia and Ho-Oh have been made available via field research, as they previously only appeared to the player after being defeated in five-star raids. There has been no indication as to how the power of the Field Research versions will compare to their raid-based brethren, but we expect them to be in the same range.  .

If you haven’t played for a while but want to get in on the Lugia and Ho-Oh action, Field Research Breakthroughs are completing challenges found at PokeStops, which earn one red stamp a day. Earning seven of these stamps will unlock the encounter with one of the eight Legendaries, which can then be caught by normal means.

Lugia and Ho-Oh may now appear to lucky Trainers who complete Field Research tasks.

One added bonus is every Legendary found via this method has a 100% chance of being caught, it will not run before you can catch it. This doesn’t mean it will be caught on the first ball, of course, but eventually the Pokemon will be yours.
