With Marvel vs. Capcom 2 being back in the FGC news stream, prominent fighting game guru Jay "Viscant" Snyder reveals the plan for a proposed esports circuit for the game, which came to an end due to one particular character.

Viscant Dishes on Marvel Vs. Capcom 2's Failed Esports Circuit

One of the greatest fighting games of all time, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, has experienced sort of a renaissance these past few weeks. First, the Battle of the Strongest event generated over $7,000 in crowdfunded cash which was split amongst winning participants. Earlier today, Jay "Viscant" Snyder revealed an MvC2-related bombshell: there was almost an esports circuit for the game over a decade ago.

In the spirit of the MvC2 talk on the timeline lately.

Did you know MLG wanted to run MvC2 as an esport (almost before that was even a word) at one point?

Snyder goes on to discuss the history of the game's esports life, and how Cable, the gun-weilding futuristic badass, was the among the hangups Major League Gaming (MLG) had with the game. Snyder describes the reality of the situation, in that if the "God Tier" was banned, it would just give other characters the opportunity to dominate the metagame. For the unaware, MvC2 is dominated by four "God Tier" characters: Magneto, Storm, Sentinel, and Cable.

While Cable is undoubtedly the fourth best character in the tier due to his lack of flight, the MLG executives may have thought would've upset causal viewers due to the perceived "spammy-ness" of his mostly projectile moveset. While Cable is definitely more than three gunshots and a Viper Beam (as Maximillian shows us below,) uninitiated viewers would only see players "spamming guns" and could potentially be turned off.

Whether you believe they exist or not (you know my stance,) tiers have been a part of the FGC forever. Street Fighter V's newest character, Kage, isn't safe from this debate either. See what your favorite fighting game players are saying about Ryu's shadow!
