Last Chance Saturday
Saturday January 26th at 1:30PM Eastern/10:30AM Pacific will see four separate Last Chance Qualifying tournaments over on the Dragon Ball FighterZ Twitch channel. The LCQs will decide who will join Ryota “Kazunoko” Inoue, Dominique “SonicFox” McLean, Goichi “GO1” Kishida, and Eduardo “HookGangGod” Deno” in the Top 8 on Sunday.
Each of the four tournaments features up to 16 pools, meaning there will be plenty of DBFZ to be played before the four LCQ winners are decided. What’s also interesting about the LCQs is the format: instead of four separate double-elimination tournaments with separate players registered, all four tournament sare single-elimination, but everyone who registers is in each bracket. The only player that won’t make it from LCQ 1 to LCQ 2 is the winner of LCQ 1, and this will continue until we have four winners.
This could lead to more exciting and tense action overall, as each match being one and one means that there’s no losers bracket safety net to keep someone afloat. Furthermore, if a big name gets upset in LCQ 1, they have a chance to redeem themselves in LCQ 2 -- and more importantly fans of that player have a chance to keep watching.
Names to look out for in the LCQ brackets include Christopher “NYChrisG” Gonzalez, Ryo “Dogura” Nozaki, and Jon “dekillsage” Coello, among others.
The Main Event
The Top 8 of the inaugural DBFZ World Tour is set to begin at 2PM Eastern/11AM Pacific on the same DBFZ Twitch stream. The four Last Chance Qualifiers will be thrown right into the fire against the some of the best fighting game players in the world, all competing to be the first ever DBFZ World Champion. Could we see a repeat of the EVO 2018 Grand Finals between GO1 and SonicFox? Will Kazunoko continue his domination after winning four of the seven qualifiers? Might a Last Chance Qualifier steal the show and take the title? There's a lot of storylines to pay attention to, and all of them will lead to some interesting play on Sunday.
After the tournament concludes —or at the very least before the start of Grand Finals — Bandai Namco has stayed that there will be news regarding the future of not only DBFZ but also a brand new game in the Dragon Ball universe, but we’ll have to wait and see what that’s about.
Not only is the promise of a weekend of top DBFZ action enticing, but the tease of big announcements at the end of the tournament should give Dragon Ball fans plenty of reason to tune in. This will be a huge weekend for all things Dragon Bal, so make sure to check out the Twitch stream throughout the weekend to take it all in.
