Overwatch League Community Countdown Matches Format To Change

The Overwatch League is set to kick off the 2019 season in under a week, and while many fans are anticipating some exciting games, not everyone is pleased with the quality of games we’ve seen so far from the Community Countdown. The games from earlier today and tomorrow were advertised as “Team Scrims”, but it seems that the teams involved in todays matches are not willing to reveal any real strategies they may have prepared for the 2019 OWL season, opting instead to play off-roles and less than optimal heroes instead.

This has unfortunately caused quite a bit of outcry in the community, with fans taking to social media to complain about the quality of the games being played. In an attempt to redeem the quality of the games for the rest of the weekend, Overwatch League Commissioner Nate Nanzer has taken to Twitter to announce that the remaining games from earlier today, and the games for tomorrow, will instead be played with the Mystery Heroes condition, meaning the teams will not be able to pick the heroes they want to for the remaining games.

For the final match today and all day tomorrow, we are switching to Mystery Heroes. I was hoping we could have some competitive maps for the community today and am disappointed that didn’t happen. You the fans are why we do this and why we have jobs. Sorry to let you down today.

Whether or not you agree with the team’s decision to hold back strats and take these games less than serious, the decision has been taken out of their hands. Hopefully the games tomorrow are more enjoyable for the fans to watch, before the main event kicks off next week.
