Anthem Developer Unveils Loot Update on Reddit

The reception for the hotly-anticipated Anthem has been sort of lukewarm, to say the least. The development team at Bioware hopes this latest change will help heat up interest in their action-RPG. Earlier today, a developer from the Bioware team took to Reddit to alert players of an update to the game’s loot system.

The gist of the changes is that weapons Inscriptions will now correspond to the weapon they are rolled onto. This means that you’ll no longer, for example, have an Assault Rifle with Sniper perks on it. Weapons without type-specific perks will instead feature Inscriptions that benefit the Javelin, such as additional lightning damage. Players will also no longer have common and uncommon drops at level 30. Lastly, Bioware has reduced the crafting materials needed to craft a Masterwork from 25 Masterwork Embers to 15. So What Does This Mean?

Sort of like the vanilla Destiny and Diablo III loot changes, this change puts some structure to the “completely random” loot system. No longer will loot truly be “random” in that you could wait all this time to get a powerful item that had useless perks. Weapons will now only be beneficial, either to the weapon or to the player as a whole. Players will also no longer get their hopes up when seeing an Uncommon drop thinking it’s a Legendary. It’s worth noting that these changes will only apply to new items that drop and will not affect items that already exist. So your Ranger’s Marksman Rifle with Autocannon buffs will still exist and can serve as a light-hearted reminder of a bygone era.

What’s Next?

There are a number of issues that Bioware will have to work through, but one on the tops of their collective minds seem to relate to the risk-versus-reward of Grandmaster 2 and 3.

We’d also like to see changes to the load times, network, and menu navigation, but that will certainly come with time. Until then, all we can do is grind. Here’s how to get your hands on more Weapon Parts to hopefully craft yourself some better gear.
