Mengu Wins Magic: The Gathering Arena Mythic Invitational
By Wyatt Fossett ·
Live from the show floor at PAX East in Boston, Massachusetts, some of the world's best MTG Arena players gathered for a chance to be crowned the Mythic Invitational Champion and take home part of a $1,000,000 prize pool.
In what might hold up as the most dominant digital tabletop performance in the history of the Esport, Andrea Mengucci lifted the Mythic Invitational Championship trophy without dropping a single bead of sweat. The Mythic Invitational live from the PAX East 2019 show floor saw a whole weekend filled with epic deck battles, and intense luck.
Championship Sunday saw a near flawless advance from Andrea Mengucci through the winners bracket, and some fantastic drama in the losers bracket. In the end, it all came down to one player's deck against another's.
Dominant Decks
Mengucci, or "Mengu09" as some of you may know him, came into the weekend with some very strong decks, and in the grand finals he went for a White/Blue/Black or “Esper” deck. His opponent in Piotr “Kanister” Głogowski brought a Blue/Red or “Izzet” deck, but it was no match for the epic play of Mengucci’s Esper.
Unfortunately for the rest of the playing pool, it was all Mengucci, all weekend.
In two head-to-head matches throughout the winners bracket, Mengucci lost a single game to Savjz early on before going undefeated all the way to the finals. Upon arrival, Mengucci handed losers bracket winner Kanister a swift loss going 2-0 to claim the Magic: The Gathering Mythic Invitation live on the PAX East show floor.
Mengu, the Mythical
With three World Magic Cup Top 8 finishes, Mengucci hasn’t won a major tournament since the 2015 World Magic Cup. The Italian-born 2019 Mythic Invitational Champion walks away from Pax East in Boston with a whole ton of confidence and momentum. Oh right. He also takes home a $250,000 share of the tournament’s $1,000,000 prize pool.
His perfect Sunday culminated in a pure show of dominance in the grand finals by Andrea Mengucci, ending the Mythic Invitational weekend.
Next up for Magic: The Gathering Esports is the Mythic Championship II live from London, England, on April 26th-28th. Keep it locked here for all your MTG Pro League updates.
