How to Wavedash in Mortal Kombat 11
By TJ Denzer ·
It didn't take long for Mortal Kombat pro players to discover some advanced techniques in circumventing MK11's methodical movement. Here's how to wavedash.

The wait is over. Mortal Kombat 11 is here and folks have been digging in. That of course means breaking everything down and figuring out how to manipulate the mechanics of the game to create new tech. MK11 features some pretty methodical movement, but the fighting game community has found a way to quicken up the pace and get to your enemies in no time with a form of wavedash.
Mortal Kombat 11’s wavedash was discovered by FGC R-cade pro player Alioune Camara. Camara demonstrated the technique, alongside instructions and several videos showing how it works. In order to wavedash in MK11, the player must:
- Input a dash just before holding the block button.
- Immediately leave block and press forward quickly.
- Alternate between block and forward inputs, i.e. block, forward, block, forward, block forward.
The video in Camara’s initial demonstration was taken down, but he has also posted several more videos showing the difference between various character wavedashes like Sub-Zero and Kotal Kahn.
Kotal Khan wavedash speed. I wonder if some chars are even faster. Also this def takes practice. #MK11 pic.twitter.com/8adREYnjPJ

Considering Alioune’s initial video was taken down seemingly on a copyright strike, it could be that the wavedash in Mortal Kombat 11 was not in any way intentional. It could be that a patch may eliminate the technique from the game. It appears that NetherRealm is already targeting a patch that will address issues with the difficulties of the Towers of Time and rewards for the Krypt.
That said, maybe not. Wavedash has been around for a while and many players probably recognize it in it’s most famous form in Super Smash Bros. Melee where it is considered an integral technique for top-level play. Considering it’s not an easy thing to do, it may be left in the game as a tool for high-level players in MK11 to employ in their arsenal as well, but who knows.
If Mortal Kombat 11 does end up eliminating the wavedash, we at Twin Galaxies will be one of the first to tell you. Until then, enjoy the game and read up on our Fatalities List to know the best ways to dispatch enemies with your favorite characters.
