The Overwatch World Cup has become one of the most popular esports events ever since its first iteration took place back in the year of 2016. One of the biggest changes that the 2019 Overwatch World Cup will see from previous years is that the competition will not see teams qualify for the latter stages of the tournament that have taken place at Blizzcon through qualifiers across the Earth. This year's Blizzcon event will see the entirety of the 2019 Overwatch World Cup take place in a one week period in connection with the schedule of Blizzcon.
The schedule format for the tournament will see competing teams battle it out against each other in a set of Preliminary Rounds that will take place before the opening ceremony of Blizzcon. These Preliminary Rounds will determine which teams will compete in the Group Stage where the top six teams that will compete in the single-elimination bracket will be decided. These six teams will then battle it out for the right to claim the title of champions.
Teams will be seeded for the 2019 Overwatch World Cup through the use of a point system based on their country's final placements in each of the last year editions of the popular esports tournament. Competition Committees will also be returning to the 2019 Overwatch World Cup in order to select the players for all of the competing teams. However, this year the General Manager position will also be decided by votes from the fans and players of each country.
You can find the schedule for the competition committee selection and player selection process below. More information on this process can be found in the official announcement post of the event.
With a much more compact schedule, the 2019 Overwatch World Cup will be looking to deliver as much exciting esports action to fans of Blizzard Entertainment's first-person shooter title in what is shaping up to be a whirlwind of a week at this year's Blizzcon event.
