The Internet Reacts to the 2019 Pokemon Press Conference

The first of two major Pokemon-related presentations, the 2019 Pokemon Press Conference, aired on Twitch late Tuesday night, and the social media scene was buzzing with every announcement. From more Detective Pikachu to playing Pokemon in your sleep, there was a lot for the community to absorb... and they did so with hot takes on Twitter. Here are some of the best.

To say the mood was tense going into the show would be an understatement:

I’m hype to see news about everything from #PokemonPressConference! And then in a few days is #PokemonSwordShield news!

The event began with a brief mention of the Detective Pikachu movie, including a visit from the Managing Director of Toho, Hiro Matsuoka. Matsuoka went a bit rogue and touted another Toho project, the new Godzilla: King of the Monsters coming this weekend, which got Twitter all riled up:

Godzilla is my favorite Pokémon. #PokemonPressConference

I'll be able to trade Pokémon whenever I want as long as I have my smart phone and Pokémon Home. This makes the #PokemonPressConference worth it all on its own.

The press conference took a bit of a turn when Pokemon Sleep, The Pokemon Company’s new game designed to turn “sleeping into entertainment,” was unveiled:

Next was a new accessory designed to bring Pokemon Sleep’s data to other Pokemon games, Pokemon Go Plus +. The reactions to the device’s name did not disappoint:

#PokemonGo Plus Plus. Good to see they're still banging out those awesome names. #PokemonPressConference

— RandomDude (@sliceanddice46) May 29, 2019

Pokemon GO Plus+ (Yes, you pronounce both pluses). You can use it as a standard Pokemon GO plus, but it also works with Pokemon Sleep to monitor your sleep. They are really doing this. I don't know what world I live in anymore. #PokemonPressConference

The final announcement was Pokemon Masters, a brand new game from mobile developer DeNA. While the brief look at gameplay was appreciated, one minor detail really set Twitter off:

No one: ...

Brock: *Suddenly lacks a shirt*

#PokemonPressConference

— Skynix (@_dystoxia) May 29, 2019

Let's have more Pokemon Masters, and less Pokemon sleep #PokemonPressConference

— Brett (ブレット) (@I3rok3n_Sword) May 29, 2019

If you dream about shirtless Brock you get more experience. #PokemonPressConference

— Jordan Salazar (@TheNeoTaku) May 29, 2019

The press conference ended, and the Pokemon faithful now had to sleep (tee hee) on the news until the next major presentation focusing on Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield next week. What news will that bring? We’ll have to wait and see.
