The ever-present Red Dead Online keeps chugging along, wih two new ways to play coming to the persistent online world this week.

Red Dead Online Adds Hunting Challenge, New Showdown Mode

The latest updates to the ever-popular Red Dead Online are sure to please those still patrolling the frontier, with highlights including a hunting-based challenge and a new game mode that’ll have players running for their lives.

First is the new Wild Animal Kills Challenge, a new Free Roam event that matches players against each other in a contest of hunting the biggest game in the West. Points are given out based on how big the animal is, with each animal scoring one to three points based on size. Eventually more dangerous game will appear which offer bonus points. Oh, and for those familiar with how some RDO players can be, the other hunters in the challenge cannot be attacked so don’t worry about getting snuck up on while you’re hunting.

Accompanying the big game hunting is a new Showdown Mode variant called Head for the Hills, where one player must run through the wilderness and reach a safehouse while the other players in the session hunt the runner down. Once the runner escapes or is killed, a new player will assume the role of the prey and the game will start over.

Perhaps the most important addition to Red Dead Online: this sweet hat.

Head for the Hills will be featured during a livestream on the official Rockstar Games channels Friday May 31 at 5PM Eastern time, so check out the studio’s YouTube, Facebook, or Twitch channels to learn more about the new Showdown and everything else being added to Red Dead Online in this update.

We’re happy to see Red Dead Online continue to pull players in with new game modes and other fresh activities. RDO looks like it’s headed down the path of Grand Theft Auto Online, which is still being updated even now five and a half years after release. Rockstar maintaining two successful online communities would be a monumental feat all by itself, and continuing to add content like this will help that cause.
