Updates on his Commander X16, arcade cabinet, and surprising Petscii Robots ports.
After regaining control of his channel, The 8-Bit Guy returns with an update on three long-running passion projects. He shows off progress on the second-generation Commander X16 home computer, a brand-new arcade cabinet build and a flurry of unexpected ports for his hit homebrew game Petscii Robots. The nearly 19-minute video reveals that the X16 project is no longer dormant: he now has working v2 boards with 2 MB of RAM, simpler power circuitry and 26-pin expansion connectors. In between hardware updates he tours his custom cabinet, sharing how he integrated real coin slots, RGB lighting and a removable computer module so the machine can run multiple platforms.
The biggest surprise comes when he unveils new versions of Petscii Robots for the Nintendo 3DS, Texas Instruments graphing calculators and even an HP-Prime calculator. Fans who have followed the project since its Commodore 64 debut were delighted to see the game cross into handheld and educational devices. He also casually notes that a friend has actually purchased the Commodore trademarks, meaning future Commander machines could officially carry the famous name.
Viewers applauded the update video, with comments praising his work ethic and the breadth of his retro ambitions. One viewer wrote "Really impressive to see how much work and dedication goes into every port of Petscii Robots! I really enjoyed the part about upgrading the arcade cabinet. Huge respect to anyone who can manage so many projects with such attention to detail!" Another remarked that the 3DS port is wild and joked that the calculator version is even wilder. Top comments also included questions about telling an eBay seller about a shipping mistake and congratulated him on the second-gen X16’s design. Overall the sentiment was overwhelmingly positive, with fans cheering the return of updates and expressing excitement at the prospect of a new, officially branded Commodore-style machine.
