A recent report that Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls VI is still at least two years from completion has been confirmed by the game's own developers, who say progress is grim amid internal challenges at Xbox-owned Bethesda. The team cites staffing shortages, shifting priorities toward other Xbox-focused projects, and a lack of clear direction as major factors jeopardizing the sequel's timeline. A report from Game Developer says that, as part of Xbox's broader restructuring that cut 3,200 gaming-division jobs, id Software has seen its workforce slashed by roughly 50 percent, with the QA department hit hardest. The layoffs come despite the studio's recent release of Doom: The Dark Ages (2025) and its new narrative expansion, Revelations, and affect many employees who unionized last December. The cuts are part of a wider shake-up at Xbox's parent company, which is also trimming or divesting other Bethesda/ZeniMax studios such as Arkane, Compulsion, Double Fine, Undead Labs and Ninja Theory.

The shift is part of Xbox's broader restructuring, which saw roughly a quarter of Obsidian's staff laid off, though a small team will continue to maintain the *Avowed* sequel in hopes of reviving it later.
