Fnatic Win the EU LCS Summer Split

The defending EU LCS Champions have done it again, claiming victory in front of the thousands of fans in attendance and the thousands more watching at home. With an impressive performance from all members of the roster, Fnatic have once again claimed victory in Europe, cementing their place as the top team in the EU LCS and booking their spot at the World Championships. Here’s a brief breakdown of the series.

Match One

The first match saw Schalke take control from the get go, gaining an early lead and holding it for the duration of the match. Fnatic struggled to put together a game plan to deal with the aggressive plays from Schalke, while the newcomers seemed untroubled by the big stage experience as they cruised to a fairly easy victory.

Match Two

The second match was a back and forth affair, with both teams swapping the lead on an almost minute by minute basis. Fnatic were much more on the ball when it came to objectives, and though Schalke were able to build up a small lead in the mid-game, it wasn’t enough when Fnatic made their moves and took control of the game. After a series of objectives, including Baron, Fnatic were able to close out the match and level out the score.

Match Three

The third match in this series again saw Schalke take a minor lead early yet fail to build upon it in any meaningful way. Fnatic once again dominated the skirmishes and objectives, before rocketing to a large lead in a very brief period of time thanks to their successful fight over Baron. With little remaining in their way, Fnatic pushed into the base of Schalke and closed out the match to set up series point.

Match Four

The final match of the series would again see both teams come out swinging. Schalke once again took an early lead thanks to their aggressive playstyle, while Fnatic were slower to respond in this battle. Schalke seemed to dominate much of this game, however Fnatic never let their lead grow too much, ultimately pulling it all back in the end with a final team fight that saw Schalke nearly wiped from the map as Fnatic AD Carry Martin "Rekkles" Larsson claimed a Quadra-Kill.

With their victory here today, Fnatic have secured the first seed spot for Europe at the upcoming World Championships. Additionally, through their results yesterday, Team Vitality will be joining them by virtue of Championship Points accrued over the course of the year. The remaining teams will need to battle through the Gauntlet to earn their spot at worlds. For more on when the regional gauntlet will take place, check out the official schedule, here.
