LEC Spring Split Week 5 Recap & Rankings

Can G2 be broken? Is Fnatic finding their stride? We take a look at everything that went down in Week 5 of the LEC and where teams now sit.

LEC Spring Split Week 5 Recap & Rankings

Another action packed week in the LEC sees G2 cement their place at the top of leaderboard while several teams fight over the middle spots. Everything can change from week to week and we’re seeing some really convincing performances across the board. Here's what happened in Week 5 of the LEC.

G2 Esports (1st 11w-1l)

Seemingly unperturbed by their loss against Origen last week, G2 Esports fought valiantly against Schalke 04 and exceL. Two wins puts them convincingly at the top of the standings, but there’s nothing to say they’ll stay there. If Origen can take them down, it means they’re fair game for anyone who can successfully find their weakness. Neither Schalke 04 or exceL were able to find that weakness this week, so their domination of the LEC continues.

Team Vitality (2nd 8w-4l)

A win and a loss for Splyce means they retain their second place in the standings, but the distance between them and G2 has widened. Fnatic are mounting a comeback of sorts, which saw Vitality take the L, but things could easily change at the top of the table. With matchups against mid-tier teams Origen and Misfits next week, Vitality will be looking for two wins to secure their place in the top three.

Schalke 04 (=3rd 7w-5l)

Schalke 04 had a bad week which saw them lose against both G2 and SK Gaming. As a result they’re now joint 3rd place with Splyce, which isn’t a terrible place to be after two losses to be honest. Next week will see them and Splyce face off, so don’t expect them to be tied for much longer. The teams in the middle of the pack are all of comparable quality, so it’s hard to tell which way any game is going to go.

Splyce (=3rd 7w-5l)

Splyce’s win against Rogue certainly isn’t anything to write home about, but it will have come as a comfort while they licked their wounds from their bout against Vitality. Anything can change with a single win or loss at this stage in the competition, so Splyce will be looking forward to their games against Origen and Schalke 04 next week. Origen had a miserable week, so Splyce should feel confident going into that match.

SK Gaming (=5th 6w-6l)

SK Gaming is another team that suffered a win to go with their loss this week. The LEC remains a competitive playground for all teams involved. With maybe a couple of exceptions. SK’s win against Misfits sees them tie with the team, as well as with Origen at 5th place.

Origen (=5th 6w-6l)

After having such a great week last week, it was sad to see Origen come undone this week against Misfits and Fnatic. Their two losses make them joint 5th with SK Gaming and Misfits, which could certainly be worse, but after taking down the giants of G2 last week, we hoped for better. Next week they’re up against Splyce and Vitality, which could see them climbing up the leaderboard again. As long as they can figure out what went wrong this week...

Misfits Gaming (=5th 6w-6l)

Misfits suffered an embarrassing loss against Rogue last week and it’s clear they showed up looking to erase all memories of that this week. Their convincing wins against SK Gaming and Origen have pushed them up the leaderboard, but there’s more work to do to convince us that they belong in the top half of the standings. All eyes will be on their next games against Vitality and exceL next week.

Fnatic (8th 5w-7l)

Fnatic seems to be attempting one of their famous comebacks. With two wins today, against solid teams Origen and Vitality, the EU treasures of yesteryear are showing some upward momentum. Upward into 8th place, at least, but they showed some potential this week which we’d like to see followed through into the future. It’s just so sad to see them so far down the standings. Again.

exceL Esports (=9th 2w-10l)

It’s been another bad week for exceL, who appear to have all but given up already this Split. While a loss against the powerhouse of G2, who sit at the top of the standings, was all but expected, losing against Rogue was not. Being school by the best and worst teams in the competition, after two full weeks of losses, has to make you question your place in the league. Currently, that place is ‘joint 9th with Rogue’, but at this rate we wouldn’t be surprised to see them hit rock bottom soon.

Rogue (=9th 2w-10l)

Rogue’s place at the bottom of the leaderboard, in joint 9th place with exceL, is damning. But they’re showing more potential than their friends in exceL, which could see them climbing at least one rung of the ladder before too long. They’re not joining the top half of the leaderboard anytime soon, but looking at the last couple of weeks we definitely expect them to overtake exceL. Baby steps.
