Boston Uprising Complete Reverse Sweep Against Dallas Fuel

The final week of Stage 1 kicked off today, and the Boston Uprising threw the Overwatch League standings into the blender by pulling off a reverse sweep against the Dallas Fuel.

Boston Uprising Complete Reverse Sweep Against Dallas Fuel

Both the Boston Uprising and the Dallas Fuel came into the final week of Overwatch League Stage 1 needing a little bit of luck and some good play, in order to secure one of the final playoff spots still up for grabs. After dropping the first two maps to the Fuel, Boston Uprising staged an epic comeback thanks to the stellar play of their very vocal leaders.

The playoff picture for Stage 1 of the Overwatch League’s second season looked pretty wide open heading into Week 5 of play, and the stat-junkies would have had a field day with all of the possible outcomes.

Thanks to a small seven-game stage, and a map differential tie-breaker, the middle of the pack was stacked with uncertainties. Boston, for instance, began the day with one game left to play and sitting on the outside of the postseason cutoff mark. While the strong team from Dallas Fuel sat in 4th.

Bleed Blue

In similar fashion to what they’ve been putting out on the mainstage all season long, the Dallas Fuel took a very sturdy and commanding lead early in this head-to-head series. Going up 2-0 over Boston Uprising through the first two maps.

On Ilios Control, Dallas dropped a single stint to Boston, but absolutely dominated in most of the map to win it 2-1 without breaking much of a sweat. Special credit goes to RCK’s entire team EMP ultimate ability to clutch out the third point.

Dallas’ formidable assault defense was put on display when the two squads went to King’s Row in map two, where main-tank OGE and the Fuel held the Uprising to only two of the map’s three points.

It all looked to be said and done with Boston vs Dallas, but before the stats-man could call it a day, the storm brewing within the Boston Uprising, looking to make a stand after their big collegiate tournament announcement, grew too large for the Fuel to contain.

Rising Up Against the Odds

Boston Uprising waited until map three, assault on Volskaya Industries, to show the Fuel and OWL fans around the world that they weren’t going to drop out of the playoff conversation without putting up a fight.

As the two teams both claimed points A and B the first time on offense, map three went into extra innings. In sudden death, the Uprising absolutely stunned the Fuel by stopping them outright on their attempt at round two. With ease, the Uprising then captured the first point, taking map three and beginning their journey to reverse sweep territory.

Map four took place on Durado where the Uprising suffered through a damaging Fuel team to push their payload through all three points, before turning around and setting up the stone wall, giving the Fuel a goose egg. The push from Dallas on their offensive turn was halted permanently by some absolutely dominating Zarya play by Boston’s Colourhex (clip above) who used his 100% powered up energy rifle to wipe the Fuel off the map.

The tie-breaking map five was Control on Nepal and was way too close to call pretty much the entire way through. The two squads each took a point to head into the final point locked in a tie, in a tied series, with a whole lot of standings shuffling to happen when it concluded.

In the end, it all came down to astounding shot-calling from Fusions and well-played teamwork. The Boston Uprising thrust themselves into a playoff spot, for now, with their completion of reverse sweep.

As a result of the loss, the Dallas Fuel also shifted, falling from 4th to 9th place. They currently sit outside of the playoffs and must be sitting in the green room scratching their heads, because they had all but sealed their berth in the postseason.

The jumping around of rankings also helped clinch a playoff berth for the Seoul Dynasty and the San Francisco Shock while the Fuel and Uprising are now hoping for a bit of luck to make or secure roles in postseason games.

Other notable games from today were the Seoul Dynasty eliminating the reigning inaugural season champion London Spitfire from playoff contention. Then there was that bonkers Chengdu Hunters versus Atlanta Reign fight that saw all sorts of fun hero picks and memes.
