G2's Mikyx Says MSI May 'Not Be Possible' Due to Injury
By Wyatt Fossett ·
2019 has been a tough year for the G2 Esports support player, but with a trip to MSI on the line and a shiny new LEC Championship trophy on his shelf, his toughest times are still ahead.

It’s the worst nightmare of any professional athlete, in any sport, on any continent. You practice and slave over your trade, make it to a very high point in your season, only to have it all come crumbling down around you because your body falters at a critical moment.
This is exactly the situation that European Champion Mihael “Mikyx” Mehle, of the scary-looking G2 Esports, is going through right now. With wrist injury plaguing the top-tier support player from Slovenia, G2 Esports has had to sub-in Promisq on support a few times during the 2019 Spring Split. During his post-game interview with LEC host Sjokz, Mikyx nearly breaks down speaking into the hardship he faced to become a champion.
With the European title firmly in hand (figuratively, because that trophy is apparently extremely heavy and we don’t need more strain on Mikyx’s wrists) G2 Esports will be heading to Taiwan to compete against the world’s best at the 2019 Mid-Season Invitational in just a few weeks.
Now, Mikyx is struggling with the difficult mindset of a wounded victor that may have his chances at international glory cut short.
“Should I have taken breaks? Or was the lack of breaks what put me on this stage today? Thinking of that kinda made me tear up and I kept telling myself not to cry,” wrote Mikyx on Instagram.
Torn between the idea that he could have spent more time trying to heal, but knowing that his playing through his pain could have been the reason he was good enough to win it all in the 2019 LEC Spring Grand Finals.
The 20-year-old support has come a long way since his first appearance on the European stage back in 2016 with Fnatic. This G2 Esports team looks like it could very well be the strongest squad that the EU has ever produced. Winning the first-ever LEC Championship wasn’t free, however.
“I’ve had it [the pain] since I got home from last year,” said Mikyx on the YouTube show The Shotcaller regarding his hand/wrist injury. “I saw a physiotherapist, and they said it is probably just inflammation, that it would probably go away in a month or so,” he added.
Mikyx says that it is this pain and recommendation from doctors that kept him from practicing or scrimming a whole lot during the year, though he admits to still playing as much as he could.
Gearing up to practice for MSI after their celebration slows down, G2 Esports and Mikyx in particular have some big decisions to make. Will they need to bring support substitute Promiseq to the international tournament?
“I’ve always really wanted to play MSI and play all other top teams from the other regions, but right now I'm not so sure if that is gonna be possible given that I’m still very much restricted due to the injury.” concluded Mikyx on his Instagram post. “The healing and recovery takes priority, but I’m gonna give it my all nonetheless.”
We finally know all of the teams that qualified for the 2019 Mid-Season Invitational, and it’s bound to be a pretty electric atmosphere come kick-off in May. For G2 and Mikyx’s sake, we hope that the King of the EU, and one of the best supports on earth, takes care of himself leading up to the high-caliber competition.
