Overwatch League's Shanghai Dragons Are Now a Winning Team
By Wyatt Fossett ·
In dramatic fashion, the Shanghai Dragons have gone from zero wins over a huge season to a positive win-loss record in 2019.
It’s official folks, that team that was only just last year responsible for the longest losing streak in sports history is now a winning team. Yup. With their win on Day 1 of Stage 3 against the Los Angeles Valiant, the Shanghai Dragons are officially 8W - 7L on the season, making them a team with a winning record for the first time in franchise and OWL history.
It was February of this year when the Shanghai Dragons won their very first Overwatch League game riding high on the wave of support for the underdogs. The new look Dragons got off to another hard start, and the world thought that maybe not enough changed during the off-season.
Ever since the team tossed the gigantic monkey off their back, they’ve been floating around the .500 win-rate but had yet to get above it. Now, as a winning team, the Dragons sit at exactly half-way down the standings.
This 10th place feels daunting still, but Shanghai is only a single win away from being in a 2019 season playoff spot.
How crazy is that? The same team (with slight personnel changes) that didn’t win a game over the span of 409 days, who once sat at a franchise record of 0W - 42L is sitting just on the cusp of a playoff appearance come the end of the year.
It has to be among the best turnarounds in sports history, but maybe we should wait to see how the season turns out for the Dragons before we go etching their names on any plaques or trophies.
No matter how the 2019 Overwatch League season ends for the squad from Shanghai, we can definitely pause at this very moment to applaud their achievement.
