GTL: Cosplayers Elevate Hobby to Career

Cosplay has evolved substantially over the years, transforming hobbyists into pro artists. With major companies cashing in and attendance at conventions at an all time high, some cosplayers have made it profitable, but is this viable for everyone?

Cosplay as an industry has grown and evolved over the years as more and more fans join together in celebrating their favorite games, movies, and shows though the art of designing and creating costumes. As cosplaying becomes more popular though, is it possible to make a career out of costumes? On this episode of Game Talk Live, Host Mandie Roman covers these topics and more alongside her panel of experts, this week joined by Professional Cosplayer Stella Chuu, Cosplay Melee contestant Becka Noel, and Founder of Volpin Props Harrison Krix.

The panel starts the discussion with the rise of social media and how it has changed the world of cosplay. Has cosplay as an industry become mainstream enough to be recognized as more than just a hobby? The panel also looks at the announcement of a cosplay agency in Japan, specialized to cover cosplayers and events much like an agency would cover actors or writers. Is it more advantageous to join an agency or go it alone?

The topic then turns to cosplayers who make their own props, and how they have begun receiving attention from Esports events. With companies wanting trophies that are more than just a standard cup, are cosplayers and prop makers the future of trophies as well? The panel also looks at how much work goes into creating their work, and how that can affect their work and life balance. When does a hobby that becomes a job become too much?

The panel then turns to look at the power of Patreon in allowing cosplayers to make a career out of their work. The discussion looks at the pros and cons of using Patreon, and whether it is good for everyone.

Finally, the panel looks at what separates a hobbyist from a professional when it comes to cosplay. Is becoming a full time cosplayer a viable career option, and if so, how does a cosplayer know when they have crossed the line between cool hobby and hardworking job.
