Parody accounts are a pretty commonplace thing on Twitter, but sometimes a parody account catches hold and takes everyone for a ride. Such was the case with one particular Nintendo of America parody account (@NintendoAemrica) that looked a little too official when it tweeted out a fake announcement for an upcoming Nintendo Direct.

The tweet in question went up on January 6, 2019 and caught some traction via likes and retweets. Eventually, Nintendo Life and other people and outlets took notice of the lampoon and started to point it out. Despite pointing to the fact that the Twitter account is very fake, the tweet has still gained a great deal of notice, sitting at over 5,000 retwets and nearly 14,000 likes at the time of this writing.

Without knowing whether the NintendoAemrica Twitter changed its descriptions to be very clearly fake and parody before or after this tweet went viral, it’s hard to say whether or not it’s really their fault for pulling the wool over fan’s eyes. The tweet itself looks exactly like something Nintendo themselves might tweet out based on previous Nintendo Direct announcements. It’s only when you go to the page itself or look at the handle, that the farce is clear.

Regardless, NintendoAemrica most certainly did their part in riling up the masses and getting them hyped for (or highly annoyed at) something that’s simply not coming just yet. When Nintendo of America is ready to make an announcement, we and others will most certainly be there to share the real goods with fans.
